maybe what I should do is shop for a used but functional ink jet printer that will work with this older OS.  The one which broke down is an HP Photosmart 6510 all in one.  They seem to be available used on Amazon, but the reviews are kind of scary, and mine has not been trouble free, even before the paper feed mechanism failed.

Mostly document printing, but occasional color photos, on bright copy paper, not photo paper.  Any recommendations?

thanks for all the info to date, very helpful.

    No worries.

    Anyway,

Unless the Printer specifically says its compatible with a Chromebook, I don't believe you will be able to use it with one.

If you bought the iMac in early 2007, it would still be a late 2006 model. The model years change only when they release a new version. So if they had not released a new version, you were buying a current one, but it was one released the year before.

As Babowa points out, your Mac is 9 years old, its about time you start thinking about replacing it. As it will just get harder and harder to get compatible items for it.

The Refurbished section is a good place to get deals for Macs.

Other than that, moving to a PC after using a Mac for so many years may be a little more jarring than expected.
