Mac OS XYour MBP still may be damaged, so you really should make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar for a FREE evaluation.
It would be helpful if you indicated the EXACT model/year MBP that you have and the current OSX.
What is the OSX on the HDD from the older MBP?
Ciao.

Jul 21, 2015 6:09 PM in response to OGELTHORPEby Christian Sottosanti,It is an apple macbook pro "Core i5"2.4 13" Late 2011 A1278. The old hard drive was running snow leopard i believe but am not entirely sure and same goes for the broken computer which i think was running Maverick but once again I'm not sure. Apple WatchA late 2011 MacBook Pro can't run anything earlier than 10.7.2. it does not have the necessary drivers for the newer hardware.
You asked " Is there any way to tell given my circumstances?"
Tell "what"?

This is one of those odd exceptions with MBP's. A late 2011 MBP can run Snow Leopard IF it is 10.6.8 only. Earlier Snow Leopard versions will not run on a late 2011 MBP. (I have done this).
Ciao.

If you have access to another Mac, connect the HDD via USB. Then check System Preferences>Startup Disk. If the HDD is a boot drive, the OSX version should be displayed.

Mac OS XYou should use an enclosure with a USB cable. This is a sample of what is available:

Mac OS XPerhaps I should have also mentioned that installing the HDD in the 2011 MBP would also allow you to determine the OSX as well but that does require more work.

Assuming that the HDD from the 2011 MBP is dead, you will need a replacement HDD. If you get one, then you can omit the enclosure purchase and try Target Disk mode instead:
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201462
However that does require an appropriate connecting cable.
Ciao.
