A message that a disk needs repair usually indicates that there are issues with how the data is structured on the disk, not necessarily that there is something physically wrong with the drive. For more information about disk maintenance and repair, you may find the following article helpful:

Jul 22, 2015 11:49 AM in response to MS.H1231by Eric Root,Do a backup, preferable 2 separate ones on 2 drives. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors. Reboot normally.
