Q: Apple watch exercise not counting

I Went for a 20 minute outdoor walk today using the Workout app, with my phone GPS on And I didn't get credit for even one minute. I had my hands in my pockets because it was cold but given I was using gps, shouldn't it have given me credit in the exercise ring?

I am having the same problem with all activities. I have tried all of the "fixes" over the past week and it still doesn't work.  For example to day I did an hour bike ride.  Map my ride recorded the ride as 1:04:57 12.73 miles and avg speed of 11.7 mph.  The watch recorded as 1:04:37 (time diffrence due to ending workout) 0 ft and 0.0 mph.  So basically the watch thinks I sat on my bike in one spot for an hour.  This really needs to be fixed since the phones gps is clearly working and recording the data its just not communicating it to the watch.

Update: After unpairing/repairing my phone, the watch worked again for precisely one day as normal again. After unpairing, it was recording my day as it used to: brisk walks registered with the exercise ring as expected. However, I did an outside run using the Workout app on the watch in the evening, and on day two I'm right back to the same problems of no exercise registering.

The only consistency I've been able to find so far is that things work fine until I use the Workout app on the Watch; things were fine for several weeks I owned the Watch until I used the Workout app in "Outdoor Walk" mode on the hike, and after the unpair/repair, things were fine until I used the Workout app in "Outdoor Run" for a run.

I am going to unpair/repair the watch again, and then try *not* using the Workout app at all, to see if it goes back to "normal". Will post back.

I am having the same issue.  Any workout using the workout app is not registering.  i have not seen the green ring move.  Yesterday it registered 8 minutes when went for a long walk.  Two days ago it registered, but I was using a third party app which registered back with my iPhone.  Since I have not used that, it isn't registering anymore.  This is very frustrating.

Final update for the time being: Having reset the Watch and avoided the Workout app, I have seen consistency in getting exercise to register as "normal" again over the past two weeks.

My fix for now is to not use the Workout app, and my frustration is that I can't utilize a very useful app in tracking exercise, and am using a third-party app to do so. Not a huge issue, but I prefer the Workout app's interface and look forward to being able to use it again.

I'm having an interesting problem myself.  The first few weeks, I had success with using the exercise app for running and walking.  Having my phone in my at all workouts.  I always used the "no goal" since I just wanted it to record my stats as I run a fixed loop in the neighborhood and walk a fixed loop at lunch around the buildings.  Then 2 days ago something strange started happening.  I'd exit the building at lunch, choose outdoor walk - no goal, and hit start.  As I began to walk I checked my watch and noticed that after about 6 minutes, I had hit 22.78 miles! I had to cut my walk short of course, I was getting tired after such a long distance in such a short time.

    very fast.jpg

I thought this a little odd.  So I took these pictures.

Yesterday, I went out and did the same thing.  This time I started walking and kept looking at my watch.  10ft, 20 ft, 50ft, 6.5 miles, 6.6 miles.  this was after about a minute of walking.  All the other stats seemed reasonable, but the mileage varies.

I stopped the tracking.  I deleted it.  I went to fixed program of 1.1 miles (which evidently was my longest walk it remembered).  I turned that on and walked the mile or so, and it was fine.

This morning I went out for a run (first time in a week) and I started w/no goal.  I ran to the end of my street and my watch buzzed and I looked down and I was at 55miles.  Call me Flash.  I stopped the watch, went to the fixed distance (that I know it is) and hit 2.8 miles as my goal.  I ran the rest of my loop.  I know the various points along the way that it used to say "buzz...1 mile...buzz 2 miles." and it did neither.  I had run almost the 3/4 of my loop and it said I now was only at .48 miles and when I was done I had only done "50%" of my workout.  So I ended up saving that.  Mind you the activity app knows that I did something from about 6:30 to about 7:05 at a decent intensity, but the green ring only showed that I did a bit of my workout.  sigh.

When I got back home I figured that something was amiss, so I reset erased and re-paired the watch to my iPhone.  I restored from backup.  Today about 2 I went to do my 1 mile lunch loop and the watched warned me that it needed 20 minutes of activity to calibrate.  ok.  I set it to the no-goal setting was still a mess after about 50 feet.  11 miles or something like that.  I stopped and discarded it, and then I set it to a 1 mile fixed target.  it seemed to work ok. unfortunately it hasn't synced that activity back to the iPhone yet (ya'd think it would be almost immediate).  So I looked on my watch and it also says that I only did 3 minutes of exercise (although it does say that I walked 1.09 miles).

I like a lot of the other features of the watch...but I'm starting to miss my fitbit.

That is interesting. Have you called Apple? It doesn't sound like a hardware problem, but others (like me) have not experienced this problem. Could it be some nefarious combination of settings? Or, maybe it is hardware.

This was my exact issue. When the watch was brand new all was well. Oddly, as it got to know me, the exercise ring will not move. It'll literally give me 900 active calories on an outdoor bike ride, give me great data on that bike ride, and credit me with 12 minutes of exercise. Some people think it's because their walks aren't brisk enough but these rides are killers and the watch is still parsimonious with the exercise ring.

Then I began to wonder why I really needed to put on the tracker for exercise. The odometer on the bike tells me all I need to know.  If I go on that same bike ride, without tapping the exercise app "outdoor biking" it'll give me the exercise credits. So something is up. It's definitely a bug. Doubt all of us have a hardware issue. I also checked my heart rate after dying at the top of a hill just to see how fast it was. It read 40 BPM. Being an old woman whose normal heart rate is in the high 60's low 70's don't think it was 40. So I suppose maybe it could be hardware with the camera on the back that reads the blood doesn't work right. Kinda was hesitant about getting the first generation. I like the watch a lot for messages and such but suspecting the exercise piece needs work.

I'm going to run one more experiment I was just considering. I used to pick a duration but lately I've chosen leave it as open. I wonder if you pick a specific time if it'll then give you credit on the exercise ring.

That was what happened today.  I set up for a 1 mile walk, then I got credit for a mile but only 3 minutes of activity in the activity app.

    Hi Folks,

I'd like to report it that things are working again.  My dilemma evidently started when I upgraded my iPhone to iOS 9 beta 1.  Apple support contacted me (Michael) and took all my info based on my report above and a few more things.  When I started to explain to him about what was going on I remembered that I had upgraded over the weekend to iOS9.  He referred the problem to engineering and about a day later I got a call back that the fix was in beta 2 and when that came out I should be ok...which it is.  Thanks!

After I unpaired my watch, the steps seem to be working well, but the excercise is not working.  I have not used the workout app again, but did a fairly strenuous workout and it didn't register a minute of exercise, but it tracked the quick run I made up the stairs to answer my phone.  I don't get it.

I usually cycle outdoors and Outdoor Cycle has worked fine giving me credit always for the exact minutes of exercise. I crashed on my bike so while healing I decided to do Outdoor Walk for exercise. Even though I walk with an average heart rate of 115 to 125 for 30 minutes I have yet to register any exercise time when I save the workout. The summary that shows on the watch when I end the Outdoor Walk shows the correct time, distance and average heart rate is correct. After saving the green ring shows zero. I have latest software on both watch and phone and have them with me.

I have exactly the same issue — everything seems fine re: the Outdoor Walk *within* the Workout app, but the translation of data to the Activities app fails miserably. I've taken to using the Other option in the Workout app. I don't get distance, but I get everything else. Hopefully this gets fixed in the next update to the s/w.

Just got my watch a few days ago to replace my Fitbit. I also have issues....what is the other option?

II've had my watch three days, tried every fix under the sun with no luck. It's a mess. I miss my Fitbit too.  May go back to that and just wear the watch for what is really is....a watch. Really disappointed in this Apple product. Just a fancy glass faced watch as far as I can tell.
