Q: iTunes has stopped working. There is not enough memory

After the recent upgrade, I receive this notice whenever there is a change in the library. Checking using taskmaster in windows 7 shows plenty of memory.

null, iOS 8.4, iTunes

    Hello Michael,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

I see where you are getting an out of memory error when using iTunes, although it is a bit unclear exactly what you are doing when getting that error. You can try the steps in the following article to resolve the issue and if it doesn't work, please provide more specific description of what is going on.

If you can't make an iTunes backup of your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

    Regards

Thanks Jeff. This is not a back up problem. To test it, the only application working is iTunes. After some time (10 mins or so) it crashes with the error not enough memory error -50  The library is large, 140,000 tracks but until the last upgrade, it worked well. Any thoughts?

Exclude your iTunes library folder from any real-time AV scanning.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach.

Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.

Your library and device backups should be unaffected by these steps but there are also links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

If the issue persists and you have a 64-bit system try the for older video cards version which is a 64-bit installer for mostly 32-bit code, similar to all 64-bit versions of iTunes up to 12.1.

This is what I'm getting now. There's plenty of memory available.

The error message may not correctly reflect the underlying issue. Take a look inside your iTunes folder and enable the display of hidden and system files. Are the any .tmp files present? Either way do you have any active AV software that is allowed to scan your iTunes folder, or an automatic backup, or shadow copies? Have you checked the volume for errors?

Each time you play a track the iTunes library is updated. iTunes manages the updates by creating a new temporary copy of the data, then it deletes the original and renames the temporary file to replace it. In particular the .itl and .xml are updated frequently. Any process that might hold up iTunes when it attempts to read, write or rename the files you could be a trigger.

Presumably the database is stored on a local drive (internal or external) rather than remote storage?

When I see this warning (which isn't often) I close iTunes and reboot my computer and it doesn't usually return for quite some time. If I didn't generally leave my system running I'd possibly never see it.

All .tmp files deleted. No AV software scans my iTunes directory. There was an auto backup to the cloud but I shut that down a while ago. The drive has been checked for errors, nothing. I rebuilt the xml file. The library is stored on an external drive, not remotely.

I'd do a full tear down and rebuild, if for no other reason than to rule out the possibility that you have some legacy code from an older build.

    How many .tmp files btw?

    OUCH.

Will do, but how do I guarantee that it will find my library?

And just in case, do you have a list of programs that should be uninstalled, other than iTunes.exe of course. Perhaps entire directories?

See the second box I mentioned earlier. All you need is in the user tip including backup and recovery advice. The process doesn't affect the preference files or your library.

Another thought, if possible disable write behind caching on the drive holding the library.

"write behind caching": do you mean this on the drive properties? Looks like it's set.

It appears to be working without a memory error. Here's what I did from the THIRD box, didn't count correctly it seems:

iTunes will have to run for a longer period to determine if the problem is solved. If it does crash, I will do what is suggested in the SECOND box.

Over a two hour period I got two of the "out of memory" alerts (see above) but with time, it would appear that changes were completed. In about another hour, iTunes froze and no program would function. Is the latest iTunes using more memory resources that in the past?

Here's what was reported when the program loaded fully:

    Capture.JPG

And after importing some titles about an hour later, here's what the memory looked like:

    Capture.JPG

And I am now getting the "no memory" alert. And there should be enough memory for iTunes:
