Q: bluetooth pairing iPhone 6 with iMac 27"

All of a sudden I can no longer get the two devices to pair. All the operating systems are up to date. I get the numerical code to pop up on both the iMac and the iPhone when trying to pair. I get a few different error messages: either cannot find the iMac on the network or the iMac is not the correct version. It used to work.

Any ideas?

iOS devices do not pair via Bluetooth to computers for any function other than internet tethering.  They never have.

I am sure that is incorrect. I have previously paired my phone with my iMac. Perhaps you have heard of AirDrop or answering phone calls on the iMac thru a bluetooth connection on the iPhone? If not, you best not answer people on the forum.

Listen, do you think I would have wasted my time replying to you if I didn't know what I was talking about?  You obviously have no idea, otherwise you wouldn't have posted here, so just stop.

While both services...AirDrop and Handoff require local WiFi and bluetooth, no pairing is required.  So what I told you is correct.

If you don't believe me then read up on it and prove yourself wrong...

You can reject reality and substitute your own if you like... it will not change the facts.

Perhaps you have heard of AirDrop or answering phone calls on the iMac thru a bluetooth connection on the iPhone?

Neither of those things involves pairing the phone and the Mac.

Calling me a chump is pretty silly actually. I know what I have done in the past to pair by bluetooth and it worked when I paired my iPhone when Yosemite was first upgraded, believe it or not. There have been more recent updates to Yosemite and iOS and perhaps that is why it is not working now. I get an error message now on the iPhone when pairing bluetooth that says the Mac is not supported - that never happened before or I remember it differently. On the iMac I get a message that the network is unavailable even though I am on the same wifi network and each shows the other device on the screen in bluetooth. It connects in bluetooth then unconnects.

My iMac is mid 2011 and I see that it has to be mid 2012 or later for Continuity. It should still work for phone calling however....

The mid 2011 iMac does work for calls and text messages. No bluetooth pairing of the phone is necessary, or possible.

Pairing an iPhone with a computer, Mac or PC, has NEVER been supported. Search these forums and you'll see that going all the way back.

You did not pair your iPhone with your Mac at all. You're not remembering that... you're hallucinating.

Is anyone aware if this issue has been resolved yet?  I have Yosemite and an iPhone 6 Plus running IOS 8.4.  Seems this has been a problem since the beginning of Yosemite and iPhone 6.  I want to use Handoff, but bluetooth pairing must work first.  The problem must be with Yosemite, as my iPhone has easily parked with my car.  Any new ideas?  I've seen posts relating to this since Oct of last year.  Hard to believe Apple hasn't found a resolution to this problem yet. Frustrating!

Handoff does NOT require BT pairing.

    To use Handoff:

    • Sign in to the same iCloud account on all your devices.
    • Turn on Bluetooth on all the devices you want to use. Make sure your devices are near each other.
    • Connect all your devices to the same Wi-Fi network.

Ok I'm going to interject here. You CAN Pair an iPhone using Bluetooth to a PC or mac and use it for hands free like a headset. you need whats called Bluetooth stack in order for it to work. I use it all the time on my PC. OS X no longer supports it as it now uses hand-off.  You now need third party software for it to work. try Goggling hands free Bluetooth on mac. see if that helps. oh also hand off does use bluetooth. heres an exert from apples page "

    Turn on Handoff

To use Handoff, your Mac must have OS X Yosemite, and your iOS devices must have iOS 8. You must also be using supported devices.

    1. Make sure you’re signed in to iCloud using the same Apple ID on your Mac and iOS devices.
    2. Make sure Bluetooth is turned on on all your devices.
      • On your Mac: Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Bluetooth.

      • On your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch: Tap Settings > Bluetooth.
    3. Make sure Handoff is turned on on all your devices.
      • On your Mac: Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click General, then select “Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices.”

If you don’t see the option below “Recent items,” your Mac doesn’t support Handoff.

      • On your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch:Go to Settings > General > Handoff & Suggested Apps, then tap to turn on Handoff.

If you don’t see the option, your iOS device doesn’t support Handoff.

    "

so if your mac does not have bluetooth it will not work. More info here.

    list of supported devices

    Handoff and Instant Hotspot

Supported by the following Mac models:

    • MacBook Air (2012 or later)
    • MacBook Pro (2012 or later)
    • iMac (2012 or later)
    • Mac mini (2012 or later)
    • Mac Pro (late 2013)

Handoff and Instant Hotspot work with iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 8 and the Lightning connector.

I had already done all of this and it didn't work. Then, I saw an article about pairing the devices with Bluetooth first and thought that may make it work. Apparently nothing will make Handoff work.

I Will google handfree BT for Mac and see what it turns up. Thank you!

Before  I posted anything here,  I had seen the same information from Apple that you posted.  Unfortunately didn't help. So, maybe I can find something from the above query.
