Q: Photos displays "Closing the Library" for a loooong time when quitting

I Have just been migrating a large Aperture Library to the new Photos app. The import took many hours, and now just trying to quit, it is displaying the message "Closing the Library." This has been up for a couple of hours.

IS this a one-time saving of thumbnails, etc. or will this happen every time?

thank you,

Ross

    Hi!

My mom had the same problem the "Photos" app. She has a 21.5 inch, Mid 2010 iMac running OS X Yosemite version 10.10.3.

So I tried "Force Quitting" the Photos app by clicking "Force Quit," which is under the Apple Icon in the menu bar, highlighting the Photos app icon in the pop-up window and clicking the "Force Quit" button.

Once Photos was closed, I shut down the computer waited for a minute, then powered the computer back on. Now the Photos app seems to be working fine, including having updated the library with photos taken recently, even during the period when the Photos app was having the problem.

Let me know if this helps!

    Thanks for the reply.

I Let the process continue, and it finally finished after about 3 hours. I haven't started up Photos again since then, but I'm hoping that will be a one-time issue.

I had the same problem - force closed the Photos app - but that corrupted the library. Didn't want to start up again.

So I started Photos with Cmd+options wich brings up the "repair library" dialogue (well more of an OK button).

Repair took about 1hr (ca. 190 Gigs of Photos+Vids).

Now when closing it's stuck with "Closing the library".

I'll wait and see - hope this is a one time thing.

Ever since I moved all my photos from iPhoto to Photos, it's been taking hours to "Close the library..." when trying to shut down Photos or turn off my computer.

All of my photos appear to be brought it but I can't get into them until this process is finished. I've repeated this process and rebooted several times and I always get slow response. I do have 10 years' worth of photos on my hard drive so I'm wondering if this might be the issue.

    FYI,

The long lag upon closing WAS a one-time issue. Photos has been working beautifully since then.

so..I'm in the middle of being stuck on the "closing library" screen for several hours.

Should I just wait it out?

Then do I need to shut down & reboot?

hmmm...not impressed with Photos so far.

Let it roll. Once this ran its course for me, I haven't had any more trouble or lags with Photos.

Let mine run for 14 hours on "Closing the library" and it never finished. I had to force quit. Also tried letting Photos do its processing once opened. com.apple.photomodel process maxed CPU and was taking 39GB of RAM (obviously all in swap) and I finally force quit after 16 hours. Ugh. I've found so little info on what this photomodel process is actually doing. Ugh

Same issue, just started aftre a few mopmnths of using photos.  Massive use of RAM and machine grinds to a halt. Eventually finishes after approx 12 hours but repeats every time I try to quit photos.

Tried repairing the library - no luck.

Eventually backed up photos library onto an external drive and deleted it from my mac mini. I then started photos again pointing it to my old iphoto library. This ran the transition process again. Photos now seems to be running like a champ.

I solved this problem going to Force Quit. Before doing that, I tried restarting the computer and I left the window up with the

message "closing iPhoto Library" overnight, but neither helped.

Thanks for suggesting the Force Quit process which worked immediately.

I think I may have to go this route, I have 6 ish years of phone and DSLR photos.  running on a 2009 iMac.  iPhoto had started repeating thumbnails two years ago, pairing them with the wrong actual photo.  I had switched to packing up with image capture and giving up on an archive for the time being.  Really want to start using Photos but I'm wondering if I just have too large of a collection for it to handle all at once.  Thoughts?  Worth starting from scratch and reimporting?

I'm suddenly having the same problem.  After a few hours it will complete itself, but then the next time I launch Photos and try to quit it does it all over again.  Definitely not a one-time thing for me.

Err... no... it's the exact same problem.  Only difference is that in my case it's not going away.
