Q: OS X update software for my Mac mini causing problems.  Somebody help me!

At the suggestion of one of the App Store reps I bought and installed the update software for my Mac Mini.  I went from the version it came with to version 10.6.3; which according to this rep's research was the next update in the list of successive updates.  I was told that once I installed this update I could then go to the app store and upgrade further to OS X 10.10 for free.  The 10.10 update would be as far as I could update with this particular computer model.

Yesterday I received and installed the software without incident.  After restarting my computer I noticed a slight but distinct horizontal elongation of everything that displayed on my computer screen.  The speed of the computer appears to be slower than before with the exception of the Safari web browser software.  The speed of the web browser has gone from tolerable to horrendously slow.  I mean that it's so slow that if I try to open a web page with anything with more than text on it, it can take up to five minutes; if I'm willing to wait that long.

What the heck just happened?  This update was supposed to improve performance not ruin it.  Is there any way to fix this?  Can I uninstall this update?  The speed at which my browser now performs makes it nearly impossible to search for answers online and trying to contact Mac customer service is an act of futility. I'm lucky to get an answer to my phone calls and when I do I can't understand what the customer service rep is saying because of the thick accent he or she is speaking with.

Where do I go from here?

It took nearly three minutes to get this particular screen to come up and I don't know for sure if it will even go through when I try to post it.

    Problem description:

Recently installed OS X version 10.6.3 update on my Mac Mini.  Now I’m getting ultra slow performance with my web browser and slower than it used to be performance for general computer usage without web browsing.

Also; all icons and anything else appearing on my computer screen appear with a slight horizontal elongation to them.  I’m using a Dell computer monitor  I think it’s a 17” monitor.   The native display is set up at 1024x768.  Plugged directly into the back of my Mac Mini.

The computer is choking on only 1 GB of RAM.

Apple specified a mi of 2 GB and that is really not enough. With even 4 GB it is slow. You Mac can take a max of 8 GB (2x4 GB).

You can get more memory here

    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_Mac_mini/DDR3

The have a video for how to replace the memory. It is not that hard. I did it on my late 2009 Mini.

At that time I also replaced the rotating HD with an SSD and that really helped with speed.

    Delete update this too:

    Startup Items: ℹ️

        WiUtilityUSBStartUp: Path: /System/Library/StartupItems/WiUtilityUSBStartUp

Startup items are obsolete in OS X Yosemite

Also, this maybe need to be updated

            /System/Library/Extensions

[not loaded]    com.Ralink.driver.RT2870USBWirelessDriver (2.0.1) [Click for support]

      com.apple.CSConfigDotMacCert-@me.com-SharedServices.Agent.plist [Click for details]

It maybe be better to just backup your data and then boot to Recovery

OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support

and then format the startup disk and reinstall  Yosemite. Reinstall apps and then restore data

I see from your replies that you are far more experienced with this kind of stuff than I am.  I'm greatful for your help but, I'm not as computer saavy as many of the folks that frequent this help sight.

To me it's like trying to read Egyptian hyrogliphs.  I don't understand those either.

For example:  "DELETE UPDATE TO THIS."  Does this mean that the update I just performed gave me a duplicate of this file that I don't really need?

        WiUtilityUSBStartUp: Path: /System/Library/StartupItems/WiUtilityUSBStartUp

Startup items are obsolete in OS X Yosemite

Also:  "THIS MAYBE NEEDS TO BE UPDATED"

Do I really need them to run this computer or can I just delete these items outright?  The Com.Ralink.Driver  I know for a fact that I'll never use.  It was installed as a long range wifi antanna thing. Don't need it.

The com.apple.CSConfigDotMacCert-@me.com.  I don't know what that heck that is or if I need it.

If I knew how, I'd just uninstall this update and be done with it all but I don't know how.  Is it possible for you to explain these fixes you've suggested as if you were explaining them to a two year old?  It might make a little more sense to me then.

I appogize for the snooty replies and comments.  It's just frustration talking.  I really do appreciate you trying to help me.

    For:

        WiUtilityUSBStartUp: Path: /System/Library/StartupItems/WiUtilityUSBStartUp

Startup items are obsolete in OS X Yosemite

You has this item startup automatically. It appears to be for a USB wifi dongle. I think the drives have to be updated for Yosemite. O may not even use that dongle anymore.

    For this

    com.apple.CSConfigDotMacCert-@me.com

I do not know what it it is either. SIne it has @me.com it is old

A lot of times when you do a major update like yours, from 10.6 to 10.10 it is better to backup date and then format  the HD and reinstall the Yosemite vi Recovery. That will eliminate unneeded stuff and

You can delete some startup items by:

OS X Yosemite: Open items automatically when you log in

OK;  as far as updating the things that need updating and removing the things I don't need on this computer, I think I've done everything I can.  I've also ordered an upgrade to my paultry 1 gig of memory.  I'm going to an 8 gig (2x4=8) hoping that this is the last thing I have to do to get my Mac Mini working at least at the same speed level as before the OS X 10.6.3 upgrade.

I'm not kidding; the performance of my Mac Mini right now is worse than when I first went online with the original AOL dial up connection of the first generation iMac. Remember those?

Right now I'm writing this reply on my windows-based laptop connected free via wifi from our citie's public school server a mile and a half away.  And it's lightning fast compared to my cox internet connected  Mac Mini.  This has been such a frustrating ordeal due to the fact that it's all happening at a time when I need this computer working the most.  I use it for work and internet sales etc.

Thanks to those who took the time to help me out.  I'll be back to **** and moan some more if this memory upgrade doesn't give me the results I had hoped.  Thanks for your patience.
