Since I lack the intelligence to challenge either the Applecare tech who assisted me - or you - perhaps you could look at my last crash report  and tell me more accurately then Apple what is going on. Understand I am having the same problem on two different machines: a "mid-2010" 15in i5 machine, and a 13.3 retina i7 3 Ghz mid-2014 machine purchased directly from Apple's refurbished page 2 weeks ago. Both have 8GB of ram and 512GB SSDs.

It appears I cannot submit the whole crash report, but here is the beginng:

    Date/Time:       2015-07-21 20:18:08 -0400

    OS Version:      10.10.4 (Build 14E46)

Duration:        2.80s (process was unresponsive for 220 seconds before sampling)

    Steps:           29 (100ms sampling interval)

I can submit more if that would help.

I know what I am saying - the same kind of problems with two different MacBooks of different configurations - is clearly impossible. Parenthetically, I have been using PowerPoint for at least 20 years, until January 2011 in Windows, and did;t begin having these lockups and restarts until about a month ago.I regularly have produced PPTs too big to email on both operating systems, with embedded videos and audio and images, with no problems. The above crash occurred on the 5th slide or so of a presentation of less than 200K.

Then how are millions of users doing so successfully, did you get a different version of Office from them, the one that crashes maybe?

Your expert is an idiot, hope you didn't pay too much for him.

There are no Apple or Microsoft Office for Mac engineers here. Who do you think is going to interpret that crash report?

Here are the explicit Microsoft instructions for removing Office for Mac 2011. Not from so-called Apple Consultants, but Microsoft.

When you reinstall Office for Mac 2011, you will need to continue the update process until you have the lastest 14.5.3 (or later) update installed. When you are done with this process, I would then run Disk Utility just once and verify/repair permissions. Close all applications and reboot the machine.

The new Office 2016 for Mac (Preview) is a cleaner implementation, that as far as I can tell, confines everything to the individual application bundles.

Your link to removing Office for Mac is precisely the one I used and followed the first time and multiple times when I had a crash. And I did do the sequential patch installations, until I was current. It didn't help.

As to millions of people using a product problem-free - and a few having honest issues - is a familiar situation in medicine, where I have made my living for 40 years. No doctor would tell the one in a thousand - or one in ten thousand - who thought he had a bad reaction the therapeutic equivalent of "Then how are millions of users doing so successfully, did you get a different version of Office from them, the one that crashes maybe?" Such a doctor would be an insensitive, closed-mind ***, and would be excoriated by his peers.

My first mistake was to think that just because this community was hosted by Apple, there might be someone here from either Apple or experienced in reading these reports who could interpret the crash report and help me isolate my problem. Seeing the Apple logo fooled me - "There are no Apple or Microsoft Office for Mac engineers here. Who do you think is going to interpret that crash report?"

My second mistake was to think that this support community was a group of individuals who were committed to helping people diagnose their problems and solve them. I expected courtesy of the kind I have found on sailing forums and photography forums. Thanks to the responses I got here,  I have found otherwise. The odious response of Csound1 explains why he posts under a fake name.

No need to respond. I won't be back.

    Me too ...

Moving or launching ANY office app causes the Mac Book Pro to freeze and then reboot itself.

I've just had it into an apple centre, new hard drive new ram, new 10.10.4 installed by Apple, installed office 2011 for mac + all updates ...

    same thing ... freeze reboot.

After doing tons of transfers and migrations from mac to mac, and working with office 2011, it can run, it's just a pain to get there.

I've had to both reinstall office, and rush to get to the updates part. A lot of people fail to do the "critical" updates that are released, while not realizing it will make or break being able to use the program, literally.

The thing I've run into is Microsoft error reporting pops up and it won't let you do anything, except restart the office program, and then it happens again. if you can get to help > check for updates in time before it crashes, it'll update the programs, and it's worked for me without issues.

The other thing I've run into is that the program just crashes with no rhyme or reason when I try to do a fresh install. When I get to the update for 14.1.0 that updater would list, it refuses to install. I've had to go to Microsoft's website to manually download any update past 14.0.1, before I attempt to launch the program.

office 2011 will work.. you just have to do the updates, or putz around with them to get it to work successfully.

You would be better served to update to Office for Mac 2011 update 14.5.5 (12-Sept), than try to slug along in the 14.4.5 version that you state. Use the check for updates in any of the applications to get it.

This did the trick for me! ol' 14.0 doesn't play nice with 10.10.5.

14.0 doesn't play nice with much of anything.

For those interested, Microsoft released the boxed perpetual license version of Office 2016 for Mac and Windows yesterday. MacMall has it for $209.99 for the business version which includes Outlook, or $139.99 for the home version without Outlook. Both much better prices than directly from MS.

It can also be obtained from Amazon and other sellers as a digital download with the product activation key sent in an email.
