HT201079: Family purchases and payments

Learn about Family purchases and payments

Q: My children are over 18! I don't want to be paying for their purchases!

I Have family sharing with my three children and husband, all of whom are over 18!  I would like to be able to click a box next to a family member which says Pay using your own apple ID.  I like the option to be able to say No to under 18's, but why can't this be general.

I took out a family membership to Apple Music, so that we would save money.

why does this have to be linked to family sharing?

I Will end up going overdrawn at this rate!  Would you like to pay my bank charges?

NOt thought out very well!

This is a user forum - you are not talking directly to Apple.

If you want to submit feedback do so at http://www.apple.com/feedback/, contact the nearest Apple store or call Apple Care.

Maybe your kids could help pay the bank charges since they are adults now.

If you have something we can help with please ask, but we are just other users - we can't change Apples policies.

Probably Apple has to come up with some way to delineate what is a "family", otherwise you living with a group of other adults (like a bunch of college kinds in a dorm) is no different from 4 unrelated adults sharing a residence.  If you aren't fiscally interdependent then you are probably getting away from the classic mom+dad+2.5 kids immediate family and to a point where they are almost considered separate family.  If this was back in the days when all you had was vinyl albums they would probably be at the point where they would be considering buying their own copies for the day they leave the nest. This all likely traces back to somebody along the line of command (which includes business relations with the media companies) being concerned about media piracy and trying to find a way to determine who is independent enough so they really should be buying their own copy versus "family" who is a great-great uncle 4 times removed 5000 miles away and you have never met.

Tell your kids that you will no longer be paying for their iTunes account and that they need to establish their own Apple iTunes account using their own method of payment such as a credit card. Then go ahead and remove them from your Family Settings in your iTunes account settings.

Change the password and make them have their own account.
