Jun 7, 2015 3:33 PM in response to lydianicoleeeeby fattyz,Easy way to transfer your music lib off your iphone onto your computer and into itunes. Requires ifunbox. (free) Export your songs out of your iphone using ifunbox. Make sure all your stuff is there (i put it in a folder on my desktop) Delete everything out of itunes lib. (to avoid duplicates) (just takes a couple clicks) Make sure you have "manually manage music and videos" selected in iphone summary in itunes. Delete all music off iphone to avoid duplicates again (settings usage music edit delete) In itunes under your device select music from the on my device section in lower left pane (should be blank) Now go to the folder on your desktop an open the folder you exported your music to. Select all and drag and drop onto itunes. Wait for it to copy all your stuff back onto your iphone. There you go. Your iphone can be used as a storage device/mp3 player using this method. You can now add songs to your device from your desktop by drag and drop in itunes or ifunbox. No sync required. It won't matter if you got the songs in the store or you rip them or whatever. It's not being totally free of itunes but it's as close as I can get.

Jun 8, 2015 6:53 AM in response to lydianicoleeeeby Strike of Turin,I'm sure you have figured it out by now, but to anyone who is having the same frustrating problem I am: How to get your purchased/downloaded music from your iPhone into your computer so you don't lose it when syncing:
On the newest edition of iTunes, on the left hand side of the screen in the panel you will see a small text reading "On My Device" and underneath it is a set of subtexts for the different categories of what is on your iPhone. To get the music to download to your pc, right click this small, grey text and then select transfer purchases. This will finally, at long and unexplained last, start transferring your music you have already legitimately paid for from your iPhone to your computer.
The problem with the designers of the iTunes program and updates is that they are most likely tech-support gurus and speak languages that most of us do not understand. So when they design the platform, they're not thinking like someone who does not speak computer; they can only ASSUME you know everything they do and unintentionally hide the most important parts of the program!
Hope this helps!

Jun 8, 2015 8:17 AM in response to Strike of Turinby turingtest2,After the best part of two years we can assume the original issue was resolved one way or another. Your suggestion falls short since it only recovers store purchases, not other media ripped or downloaded from other sources. Fuller solutions have already been offered within this thread.

Jun 8, 2015 5:01 PM in response to fattyzby fattyz,I should add that this will not save your playlists. I did not realize that when I posted. Today I used a small program called idump (free) to do the same thing with a couple old ipads I have.
Hope this helps good luck

Jun 10, 2015 8:02 AM in response to turingtest2by Strike of Turin,Thank you for your candor.
If you visit community-based product support pages regularly, you will find that answers are frequently rendered to questions posted up to a decade before. This doesn't mean that we as a community should not give our two cents, because you never know what might work for someone or if the way you phrase helpful tips might be the right articulation to procure understanding.
As for the ripped and downloaded music, if you want to use a program (iTunes) developed by Apple intended to handle music purchased through the Apple store to download/upload/transfer music you acquired through nefarious means, Android-based utilities, or otherwise other-than-Apple sources, then you should expect you will have to use a 3rd-party program to do so. It is not a shot at anyone who downloads music from other sources, but I have to assume Apple "gives 0 #$%^s" about you utilizing their program for reasons other than what it was designed to do.
If you want to use the product for purposes other than intended, be prepared to take a chance on the 3rd-party programs that others have suggested. Some may work fine, others may be malicious programs or spamware. But please don't attempt to take a high road on the issue if you're attempting to circumvent a product's original purpose.

Jun 15, 2015 12:35 PM in response to Code-EZby Baywatchboy,I tried using DeTune. When I plugged my phone into my computer, there is no list of everything on my phone. It just lists my phone, but not everything on it.
My issue is this. I recently bought a MacBook Air to replace my old MBP. I bought a music CD recently and was able to put that music on my old MBP and sync through iTunes to get the CD onto my phone, but how do I get the music onto my MBA. Is there a way to transfer from my iPhone? Thanks.
-
Jun 15, 2015 12:42 PM in response to Baywatchboyby turingtest2,If the old MBP is still working copy the entire iTunes folder from your user's music folder to the MBA into the user's music folder on the MBA. If your library is too large for the MBA's internal drive copy it to the root of a portable external drive, then option start iTunes on the MBA to connect to the iTunes library on the external drive.
If you can't do that, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
Whichever method you use you should maintain a separate copy of the library on another drive for security.

1. Select your file that you want to copy
2. Then use your keyboard CTRL+C
3. Go to Itunes>My Device>Music
4. Use keyboard again this time CTRL+V
5. DONE. Your music is sync to your iPhone
Hope this help!

Jul 6, 2015 10:31 PM in response to turingtest2by jmmaurer219,I have read how to pull music from phone to itunes a few times and am still confused.
1. will that bring ripped music from my iphone to itunes or will I lose that music forever?
quasi related questions from other threads you've been on:
2. how do I get my wife's account, my account, and any old account to merge?
3. if I can't succeed at pulling music over, how do I delete all those songs with "!"? In the past, I let itunes run so I can separate by # of plays. Select all with "!", right click and delete, but they end up repopulating.
Thank you very much.

Jul 6, 2015 11:32 PM in response to jmmaurer219by turingtest2,- The aim of the steps in Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device is to get any content that only exists on your devices into your library. Once there you should be able to backup the device, and then restore it, replacing all content on the device and getting it properly associated with the new library.
- You cannot merge iTunes accounts, but Family Sharing may make it easier to share content.
- There are a number of approaches you can take to cleaning up. I haven't time to go into detail, but take a look at Re: How do I force iTunes to refresh my library? There are techniques presented for deduping and cleaning dead links, and there should be some backup advice there too.
