Q: Photos Completely Useless to Me

The hype over Photos in the months preceding its release was that it would be a powerhouse app, the only one you would ever need, a melding of Aperture and iPhotos of all the best parts.  What a load of crap!

I have tens of thousands of photos organized by File Name, which was imported in some Metadata mess, but which I can not sort my photos by, and which I cannot view as a "Title".  My whole library hinges on the File Name and my ability to organize my photos my File Name.

Stars: I use Stars to signify priority of my photos, and when a priority level of a photo changes, so does the Star rating.  I don't want to have to dream up Key Words in place of my stars.

In the past I have imported photos from both my iPhone and my camera, imported them into iPhoto, deleted them from my iPhone, exported them to an external folder where at my leisure I carefully edit and assign the appropriate File Name to each photo, once complete, the Photos were brought back into iPhoto ... File Names and all.

They were then sorted and organized by File Name ... do you see a pattern here?

I need to view the File Name as a title so that I know which photo is which, because on the surface many look so very similar.  I then synch select photos back to iCloud and into various albums on my iPad.  Had a system down with iPhoto, and apparently it is a system which does not exist on Photos, which apparently I need to use now to get my photos synched back onto my iPad and iPhone as needed.

Unless someone can show me that I'm just stupid and not figuring this out, and screwing around trying to deal with this is costing me time and money I don't have ... this new Photos app is completely useless to me and Apple ought to consider trashing this thing, bring back iPhotos on the Mac and convert iOS to iPhotos on iPhone and iPad.

There ... I've said it.  I've said what everyone else is thinking.

File Names people ... It's as simple as File Names as Titles

The iOS version of iPhoto is no longer supported on iOS8.  There is no replacement  which is a big loss. I have not yet found any third-party app for the iPhone that can replace iPhoto iOS.

I can no longer use my iPad to edit photos when I am traveling. It used to be very convenient with iPhoto on the iPad, but it is impossible to assign metadata to photos in Photos iOS or to display metadata with the photos at all, and then it is useless to edit the photos, because we cannot even see the pixel size or filetype or add captions.

I have tens of thousands of photos organized by File Name, which was imported in some Metadata mess, but which I can not sort my photos by, and which I cannot view as a "Title".  My whole library hinges on the File Name and my ability to organize my photos my File Name.

There's an easy workaround until Photos 2 is released with El Capitan this fall.

1- under the View ➙ Metadata menu option check off all of the metadata you want to be visible.

2 - use this Applescript app to write the file name to the Title field under each thumbnail: Photos for Mac: Batch Changing the Titles to the Filename

Moments in Photos are the new Events, i.e. groupings of photos sorted by date taken.

When the iPhoto Library was first migrated to Photos there is a folder created in the sidebar titled iPhoto Events and all migrated iPhoto Events (which are now Moments) are represented by an album in that folder. To open the sidebar if it's not already open use the Option+Command+S key combination.

NOTE: It's been reported by several users that if the Event albums are moved out of the iPhoto Library folder in the sidebar they may disappear.  It's not widespread but several users have reported that issue.  Therefore, if you want to assure that you keep those Event albums don't move them outside the iPhoto Events folder.

There's a way to simulate events in Photos.

When new photos are imported into the Photos library go to the Last Import smart album, select all the photos and use the File New Album menu option or use the key combination Command+N.  Name it as desired.  It will appear just above the iPhoto Events folder where you can drag it into the iPhoto Events folder

When you click on the iPhoto Events folder you'll get a simulated iPhoto Events window.

The downside to the simulation is that the Albums/Events can only be sorted automatically by Title. But they can also be sorted manually, either in the sidebar or in the folder's window at the right.  This will change with the release of Photos 2 with El Capitan this fall.  That will allow the sorting by date or title, ascending or descending.

Tell Apple what missing features you'd like restored or new features added in Photos via Apple-Photos Feedback.

I recently upgraded from iPhoto to Photos and I am having multiple issues.

    1. Photos will not recognize all of the photos on an SD card when I try to import

    2. Photos will not recognize images that have already been imported, and it gives me duplicates.

    3. Photos will not drag and drop to gmail or Facebook (big hassle to download to desktop, copy, paste, then delete from desktop.

    4. When using websites or a program  to upload a photo (ex: Blogger), Photos will not recognize all of my images.

    5. When I am simply using Photos to look at my images, I am unable to see the same set of images (I open once, I see all 120 vacation pics from June. I open the next time, I see 4 in the same date).

Fix this program or give us back iPhoto. This is maddening.

No one has to give you back iPhoto - it is still there and works fine if you are up to date - if you are not the solution has been posted here thousands of times

as to your other statements - obviously you have a problem - if you would like help in fixing it start a new thread including details of your set up and problems - ThreadJacking old threads is not a good way to get help

I totally agree with you. I have all the same issues.  Apple must think we are idiots!

Luckily iPhoto still works for me on my macs.  But ever since Apple made it incompatibly for iPhone and iPad I have been frustrated.

They should fire the team that made this and go back and start over with iPhoto as the base platform!

    sorry but I don't agree.

Firstly this thread has been very useful,

particularly since it let me know that my concerns were not isolated.

Also, without it there is no way I could have restored iPhotos using the normal App store mechanism.

Apple have made it very difficult..

In fact, I thought it impossible..

Your comments reflect my frustration with the 'Titles' functions (or lack of) in the Photo app.  I had organized my photos using the ability to set the Title to the date taken for all my photos.  Simple functionality - gone without warning. Thanks Apple.

You may want to have a look at the User Tip section (https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/photos_osx/content?filterID=conte ntstatus%5Bpublished%5D~objecttype~objecttype%5Bdocument%5D)  and check out the Apple Scripts we posted to batch change the metadata in Photos.

For example:   Photos for Mac: Batch Changing the Title to the Capture Date

or:  Photos for Mac: Batch Change Title to Capture Date-Description-Padded Sequential Number

    Hi LN,

"No one has to give you back iPhoto - it is still there and works fine if you are up to date - if you are not the solution has been posted here thousands of times."

Actually, no, iPhotos is gone (slash through the logo) and it doesn't work at all. I even have the disk and it won't reinstall and let me use it. I've tried. I've read the solution (go in applications to previously purchased). It ain't there, either. Wish it were!

"as to your other statements - obviously you have a problem - if you would like help in fixing it start a new thread including details of your set up and problems - ThreadJacking old threads is not a good way to get help"

I agree. I have massive problems. Thanks for the tip on starting a new thread. I don't live on forums, so I'm not exactly hip to the protocol and terms. I'm just a mac user that is extremely frustrated. I've also posted directly to Apple via some other forum/email so hopefully I get a response.

I'm also taking my computer in to a Certified Mac Technician, because, joy of joys, half my photos are missing this morning. If I get any insight into what is going on, I'll gladly share if others are having the same problem.

    Happy Mac-ing!

Follow the directions posted by Tererence Devlin in this post to obtain iPhoto 9.6.1 from the App Store.  It works:

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1

If iPhoto 9.6.1 is there, close the App Store, drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash and then go back to the App Store.

Install the App from the App Store.

Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4928

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?

iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

iPhoto is in your applications folder and works just fine if you are up to date with version 9.6.1 - if you do not stay up to date see Can't Update iPhoto because it is not available in the App Store for instructions

Thanks for the tips/links! I appreciate your help!

I had iPhotos version 9.4.3 (so it is not up to date at v9.6.1)

Which brings me to Step 2: Install App from App Store. It is not visible:

    Screen Shot 2015-07-25 at 12.38.42 PM.png

Step 3: Unhide Purchases. I quite simply, don't have the Hidden Purchases option. My screen for Account Information, below (with calculator over my personal info): I do not have a prompt for "View Hidden Purchases" as listed in the instructions (also below).

    Screen Shot 2015-07-25 at 12.43.59 PM.png

    Unhide your purchases

    1. Open the Mac App Store.
    2. Choose Store > Sign In, then enter your Apple ID and password, if you're not already signed in.
    3. Choose Store > View My Account.
    4. Enter your Apple ID password, if prompted.
    5. From the Account Information page, click View Hidden Purchases.
    6. From the Hidden Purchases page, locate the app you want to unhide.
    7. Click the Unhide button.
