How do you add a Del 15" VGA monitor using the VGA adapter?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015), OS X Yosemite (10.10.4)

Thanks for the response.

I have attached the adapter to the Mac and the monitor to the adapter. Nothing on the monitor but the "Self Test color bars.

What next?
