Q: Ken Burns photos in slideshow playback jerky on tv.

Hi,

FCPx newbie, previous iMovie user. I am creating a slideshow of photos, some with Ken Burns effect. I used 1080p HD 1920x1080 res and 30p rate. Left audio and render properties on the default setting of ProRes 422. Playback is smooth on my Macbook Pro Retina.

After exporting in both Apple Device options and in the Master File option I still have some brief hesitation during playback on HD TV (via USB drive) on the KB photos only. I describe it as a slightly jerky motion.

Would love to hear some suggestions for smoothing out the playback. Thanks for your time!

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013), OS X Yosemite (10.10.4)

So have you tested the exported  video on your computer? If it plays OK, check your TV manual to see what formats they support.

If it doesn't play well on your Mac, post back to let us know.

Using the master file share option you can select different file types by choosing Computer (MP4) or Web Hosting (MOV) to produce relatively light files. Both use the H.264 codec.

BTW, is the actual frame rate 30 or 29.97?

Thanks for the quick response Russ.

Yes I have played the exported video and playback is smooth in Quicktime on my Macbook Pro Retina, including the Ken Burns photos.

The TV I am creating this for reads MP4.

The frame rate is 30, not 29.97.

    Thank you again.

Try the computer format then and let us know whether that improves things. If if doesn't, try a new custom project with a frame rate of 29.97 and paste a copy of the original timeline into the new timeline, Use the Range tool to elect a short, representative section and export it with Computer format settings.

If that still doesn't play smoothly, try upgrading to a faster USB drive.

    Hi Russ,

I did all you suggested with no change in the smoothness of the KB clips when played on the HD TV.

I also tried selecting H.264 Better Quality instead of Faster Encode. No change.

I had cross-dissolve transitions framing the KB clips so I deleted some of those to see if it made a difference. No change.

I am using a SanDisk USB 3.0 32GB. What would you suggest?

    Thank you!

Well, your set is probably USB 2.0. If it is, the USB 3.0 drive isn't the bottleneck.

Connect your MBP to the TV via HDMI.How does it look  when played in QuickTime?

Playback of the exported video is much smoother via HDMI.

That option will not be workable at the venue where the video will be showing though.

Thanks again for all your help!

Sorry haven't slogged through the whole thread. Are you using a stick or a drive directly plugged into the USB port on the TV set?

If so, it's the software on the set that's the problems. Most newer TVs have an online software update function that requires wifi or ethernet into your internet service. It can be a terribly frustrating thing to accomplish and it's glacially slow. You're not dealing with a computer, it's just a dumb box with kludgy EPROMs. If your set has never been updated, you may be required to go through all the updates, one at a time, especially if you have a Sony. Best to try this late at night.
