Q: Issues with two-step verfication on iPhone 3GS

Dear Sir/Madam,

I recently picked up a problem with my two-step verification on my iPhone 3GS. It used to work just fine for many months. My problem is that I can NOT complete the two-step verification process anymore - I can only complete the first step in the process. On my iphone when I go to "Settings" then "iCloud" then "Account" and then I enter my Apple password. This works fine. The second-step does not work anymore. The "Verify Identity" screen then pops up correctly as before and asks me to choose the method to verify my identity. I can verify with 4 different ways e.g. iphone, ipad, SMS etc. It does not matter which one I choose I can not progress past the "Verify Identity" screen. Absolutely nothing happens when I click on the "Next" button in the top right hand corner. It is as if the "Next" button does not work anymore. I am therefore stuck on the "Verify Identity" screen. What should happen as it did many times before is that a screen pops up where I can enter the Apple 4 digit code for verification. What now? I can not read my icloud mail on my iphone anymore because of this problem.

I even tried generating an "app specific password" at https://appleid.apple.com to solve this problem but it does not work when I enter the 25 string password where I would enter my apple password. I did not expect it to work but I tried anyway.

Furthermore, I tested my apple devices and they can all receive the apple verification codes. I checked this by logging into www.icloud.com from a desktop computer and sending the apple 4-digit verification codes to both my iphone 3GS and ipad 4 as part of the login process.

Please help. Many thanks

Two factor authentication is one of the things that can not be discussed here (according to Terms of Service) and is only available on Beta software. Has no ability to exist on anything below IOS 9. Once again contact developers forums and/or Apple support if they know about it.

Same issue here, it has nothing to do with developer stuff or iOS9, it's a bug in iOS 6.1.6.

I have exact the same issue.  It works fine for a while when i reinstall my 3gs. I think it goes bad when i want to delete pictures from the Photostream then it keeps asking for appleid password and through the settings it keeps hanging in two-step verification

OK, i checked the site again, it says:

Your Apple ID is protected with two-step verification

So, two-step verification doesn't work since a few weeks on iPhone 3GS (with iOS 6.1.6) installed. It worked fine before. But now, every time you wanna use any service what needs a login with you Apple ID, no chance to login anymore. Means no iCould-based services (Mail, Foto, ...), etc. :-(

    Has anybody solved this problem?

    TIA

Same issue here, suddenly started yesterday night. Cannot access (in terms of sync) any iCloud services like mails, photostream. The "Next" button to send myself a verification code simply does not work anymore. This happens on an iPhone 4S running iOS 6.1.3 (I really don't wanna update it to any newer system…)

I really start to hate Apple for how they treat customers of their internet services. As long as you always update to the latest version of a system one may be fine. But if you stick with a system for some time, nobody at Apple cares about keeping their services compatible… sorry to be whiny, but I just a similar "we don't care to keep things work" issue with iTunes Match an iTunes 10.7 few month ago. – Even though the still officially support this combination…

So, getting back this issue: does turning off two-step-verification fix the problem?

well, when it's off you don't need to go through the 2-step verification... it doesn't fix the 2-step verification problem, but you can then sync iCloud services.

EVERYONE who have this issue: please call apple support regarding this 2-step problem where the 'next' button doesn't work. If enough people call, they might admit that this is not a strange or unique problem as they told me...

According to instructions of Apple management below Apple support told me they are not even suppose to support 3GS.

Your calls are welcome, but pointless.

My issue is solved for now - touch wood. What I did as mentioned by someone earlier in this thread was to completely switch off two-step verification at http://appleid.apple.com and then switch two-step verification back on again and follow the process of re-enabling your trusted devices (e.g. iphone, ipad, mobile number etc.) again. For the last 5 days everything works fine. Since doing this I never had to login again on my iphone 3GS.

Thanks fromsouth. It's a pity that the so called vintage products aren't like wine that gets better with age and is potentially a very good wine because it's a vintage.

Apple vintage products should be called "Apple failed to last products".

though here we talk about 2 other Apple "products / features"

    - access to iCloud: iCloud is supports iOS, for some few features - https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204230

    - 2-step verification

good point with the pointless calls... but I guess there is no other way to show Apple discontent...

    1. Over a year ago and before Microsoft took support for Windows XP down, I would be very upset with Apple, but now we know we have a choice - compromise security or not use outdated products. So I am typing that on Windows XP where security is at the point that it's own designer declined to support it. It is the same with Apple i guess,..

    2. It is not all bad thou, I don't know if you realized but problem is solved - ExlipzeIT just didn't mark it solved - but he did precisely what was offered by me on the first page. Looks like by itself IOS 6 is not handling proper signup with two step.

I've tried this again but unfortunately it didn't work with my iPhone 3GS with latest possible iOS for 3GS (iOS 6.1.6).

    What I did

    - 2-step off

    - 2-step back on

    - verified all devices (including the iPhone 3GS)

    - tried to enter the password in iCloud but I'm back to the same problem where the 'next' button doesn't work

please note that I did restore the iPhone recently when I posted first in this thread.

so I cannot re activate a family owned iphone3GS found in the back of a drawer because it has been retired by apple.

    is that it.?

or am I supposed to have to disable 2step verification for everything because of the oldest device, to make them all compatible....

I can actually find-my-iphone on the old 3GS, but not verify on the device..... this seems to be a muck up...
