Q: AMD Radeon R9 M370X Struggling to play games (i.e. GTA V) - bootcamp

Hello I am running bootcamp with windows 8.1 pro.

I have the latest retina Macbook pro (mid-2015) with AMD Radeon R9 M370X graphics, with 2.8 ghz processor and 16 gb of ram.

it's completely maxed out spec-wise, yet it struggles in bootcamp, for games.

I haven't been able to try it with other games, but with GTA V it is really struggling, it lags, even when the lowest resolution settings are on, and is next to unplayable.

Is this what I should expect with my maxed out macbook?  Or is there another issue that maybe causing this.

Thanks in advance!

Things I have tried:

-  Update graphics drivers, (which windows says its up to date) but I'm unsure if it is or not.

The VC++ redistributable is already installed by Windows, you do not need to get it separately.

You should expect reasonable performance. What else you run on your Mac also impacts the performance. The nVidia 750m should provide much better performance then the current M370X discussion thread.

@nspells154: Hi, I suspect the AMD driver from El Capitan-offered package is different from version downloaded by Boot Camp Assistant in Yosemite. This might be the real reason of improved/steady FPS in intensive games. Just by the way: I'm a dev improving some drivers for Boot Camp (e.g. see Trackpad++), and I'm much interested to take a look on the drivers for Boot Camp offered by El Capitan for Mid-2015 rMBP. Could you, if possible, archive the drivers, they should be in the root folder of USB flash drive used fro Windows 8.1 installation, the folder name is 'Boot Camp' and share them with me?

    Hi Vladimir,

Just out of curiosity, if lets say I try to install these drivers on my Windows 8.1 Pro (Installed via Yosemite as the primary partition) then will it make a difference? I guess it should work.

@Gaurav Bhola: I think it should work. Maybe somebody could temporary share the archived folder via Dropbox or some other online service, I mean share not only with me, but with some other people from this thread... this could be the chance for dual-GPU Mid-2015 rMBP owners (well, I'm unfortunately not the one, I'm more interested to see is there any Boot Camp trackpad driver update in El Capitan). Actually my alternate driver already supports Mid-2015 rMBP, but it can get broken if Apple changes the drivers stack, that's why I wanted to take a look on the latest Boot Camp package from El Capitan beta. Thanks!

Okay. But I doubt whether nspells154 made a new windows 8.1 bootable using the BCA in El Capitan. If this is true then nspells154 should definitely share the BootCamp folder in his bootable drive with us.

Or else I dont know whether it will be helpful or not.

hey loner do you think putting all 4 cores and overclocking the gpu and stuff like the original poster of this thread did with msconfig can harm or damage the macbook ?

How do you plan to do that? OP did no such thing, but installed appropriate drivers.

This is what OP said :

Follow this video tutorial, its says it all. My suggestions are not download the first program he tells you to download, unless you need every last percent of CPU, because it doesn't make much of a difference. Also, when your done playing the game, make sure to turn your battery settings back to balanced, because even though I was just web browsing, my CPU was turbo'd to 3.8 ghz non-stop, and then when it was set to balanaced, it was back to normal.''

I think we can assume from this that he overclocked his macbook am I right ?

If disable/stop lots of services, then you can uninstall some of these permanently as well. You should check the msconfig settings on the BC side on Windows, before you change them. There is very little over clocking of GPUs in that entire session. You can a short term test and evaluate. You have an nVidia GPU, and this tweaking is for an AMD. Is this really what you want to do?

He said don't use the first program so I am assuming all he did is put all 4 cores and all 16GB of ram with msconfig and he putted battery performance to high, are you sure this is only for AMD GPU's ? I was wondering if this was bad for the macbook to play several hours like that

    1. Check your Windows configuration. This is a W7 example. It shows 16GB.

    rMBP2013-MachineDetails.PNG

    2. Check SysInfo. This is a W7 example. Notice the Processor Line. It shows available cores to Windows.

    3. Run DPC Checker - http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml

Based on what you get from these you can decide whether you need more or not. CPU tweaking will not get you any more GPU performance.

    4. You have plenty of VRAM.

Heat is the worst thing you can do your GPU/CPU and battery.

Thanks for the answer Loner. Check these pics, that was what I was referring to

Capture.PNGnm.PNGxvdf.PNG by putting all 4 processors and 16gb of memory and all the stuff above on high, playing several hours like that, will that damage my mac? considering the mac will be turbo'd to 3.8 ghz for a few hours

The more heat is generated, the less is the lifespan of the machine.
