Q: Does Yosemite Improve or Reduce Performance?

Hi there,

I'm a user of a Macbook Pro 15 Retina from 2013, and I'm considering upgrading to Yosemite. Although I do want to upgrade for the new look and features, I do have one major reservation. If Yosemite is going to make my computer less responsive, laggy ect. then I'm going to hugely regret the decision. For me Mavericks is a great OS, and so a performance hit would seriously put me off. Can anyone share some experience they've had with the full version please?

Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated!

Thats probably because the SSD , while some people still have a HDD... with 2 to 4GBs RAM

Then they should update their Mac to a modern specification, which is simply done.

Operating Yosemite on the hardware minimums will cause it to run slower, just like every other OS version in history.

Well i got a new macbook instead , and donated my old one to suffice my needs for doing art that is drawing and digital painting and some 3D rendering, where he just needed it for web browsing, emails, blogging, documents and editing the photos he took, since he was more of a photographer, and Mountain Lion was a cheaper upgrade from Snow Leopard retaining function , because Mavericks did not work on it well. I also upgraded it to 8GB RAM...

It is relevant in context if you did not notice that upgrading an old machine with a newer OS other than its factory default has some risks of reducing function ability , thus providing an example that reducing the GUI design for simplicity should make it require less resources , but this is not the case. Flat design defeats the objective for cognitive use.

Don't want to because of my reasons, I am uncomfortable with its GUI design and would be able to do a bit less than I would do , than what I do when using Mavericks.

I am running an iMac (27in Mid 2011) with Yosemite 10.10.3

Since installing Yosemite the only issue I have had has been the very slow startup time.  The previous OS (Mavericks) and the one before it were both a lot faster - they didn't even have time to display the "progress" bar.  It is now marginally faster than a Windows Vista laptop I have - and that's not fast...

Apart from this annoying feature there really hasn't been any notable difference.  In fact as I don't use any of the upgrade features it was a bit of wasted time installing it.  But then you do need the improved security fixes Apple includes.

Couple of things here, Mavericks and earlier did not have a 'Progress Bar', they had a 'Progress Wheel" and they all displayed it while booting up.

But your startup issue sounds like incompatible kexts loading and failing, wasting time.

Run this report and post the results here. Etrecheck

You have some known troublemakers on your Mac.

    From this list:

    Screen Shot 2015-07-26 at 11.05.47.png

Make a backup of your Mac before starting this.

All Seagate Software should be correctly uninstalled (as must all other Seagate software)

Trusteer Rapport must be correctly uninstalled (as must all other Trusteer software)

    TuneUpMyMacmust be correctly uninstalled

WDDriveUtilityHelper must be correctly uninstalled (as should all other WD software)

It is important to do this correctly, so go to the various vendors websites and follow their directions, don't just put things in the trash (as appears to already have happened with TuneUpMyMac)

    Thanks.

As far as I was aware uninstall on this system was merely a matter of dragging the item (in this case an .app) to the trashcan.  TuneupmyMac was an unwanted install that I spotted after the event.

Must I remove Trusteer Rapport? - it is a security program (presumably a plug-in) required and supplied by my bank.  Do I re-install it later?

Nope, all pole apps uninstall by dragging to the trash, 3rd parties go whichever way they please, dragging to the Trash is rarely the choice.

Trusteer is junk, it has a long history of messing with Macs, it's your choice but I would remove it.

Actually your assumption would be incorrect , when someone I work with bought a Macbook with Mavericks on, they upgraded to Yosemite(similar issues I had with my old late 2009 on his late 2013, where having issues, I helped him downgrade back to Yosemite, and now he is happy. He has a machine a step lower than mine in hardware specs.
