Q: Why is the new Photos app so slow on my Mac?

Why is the new Photos app so slow on my Mac.  Have all the latest updates. Takes 10-15 minutes for my photos to load overtime I open the app.  Frozen while they are loading.  They are all on my computer. Not coming from the cloud.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

Uninstall CleanMyMac2. It is worthless scammer.

It appears you have a hack etc/hosts file. To fix it, read Fixing a hacked /etc/hosts file

You are almost out of free space as well. Your Hard drive needs to be freed up of some large files such as Videos, music etc. onto an external drive. Personally I would back up your system completely and repair your drive if possible and reinstall the OS X. You have some serious junk installed there.

I see nothing obvious in your report that might be associated with the inability to import.  You can try the workaround of using Image Capture to download your photos to a folder on the Desktop and import into the library from there.

    themightyfinger:

Allan has identified the most obvious cause of your problems with CleanMyMac3.  Do a Google search for "uninstall cleanmymac3" to find developer instructions on uninstalling it.  Also consider fixing the host file as Allan has identified.

As for your free space, 18 GB is OK unless you're doing a lot of heavy image or video editing where you need even more scratch file space.  Otherwise don't let it fall much below what you have now.

You really should not hijack someone else thread. It it far better to start your own head so that your problem gets the attention it deserves.

Apologies, as this is the first and quite possibly last time I'll ever post in the "support" community here at Apple Discussions. Your tone is condescending and rude and I simply wanted to figure out how to get help for an infuriating problem. A much nicer, "I can see that you haven't posted here much, and this is someone else's thread. You might get more help by starting a new thread."

Thank you Old Toad. I did both those things, but Photos is still quite slow. I ran the report again and pasted the results below. See anything else or have any additional advice?

You really should not hijack someone else thread. It it far better to start your own head so that your problem gets the attention it deserves.

You have Nortons/Symantec installed. Possibly the worse program you can run on a Mac. Unnecessary and destructive. Remove it as per the developers instructions. You also could do with clearing some more space on your HardDrive.

    Hi Allan,

Thanks for the fast response. I always thought that cleanmymac was doing so much good as it reportedly freed up gigabytes of space each time. It's the only cleaning software I've ever paid for but due to the overwhelming negative responses here I will remove it asap.

    thanks

    Thanks Old Toad.

I moved all my photos to an external hard drive as we use to only have 4gb of space.

i Like the idea of reformatting my mac as I wouldn't know where to begin freeing up more space other Han perhaps my wife and my separate iTunes folders which probably amount to 40gb.

    Do you think that's warranted?

    Hi petermac87,

    Thanks for the response.

I Like your idea of backing up, repairing and reinstalling the OS.

other than cleanmymac what other software etc are you referring to ask junk? So I know not to reinstall
