Jul 27, 2015 8:21 PM in response to jessicafromeugeneby Niel,Check that the volume you’re putting them onto ia formatted as Mac OS Extended, drag them there, launch Photos with the Option key held down, click on Other Library, and choose them.
Keep a copy of them on a second external drive in case the first one fails.

Photos for MacSure
And PowerPhotos by the same authors is helpful in working with multiple Photos libraries (although usually one large one is by far best)

Aug 18, 2015 1:39 PM in response to Nielby Marks71,I tried to move my Photos library onto a Toshiba external drive. Didn't work. Then I installed Tuxera NTFS for Mac and tried again. When I push the Option key and try to open Photos Library off the Toshiba external drive, I get the message: "The Library could not be opened. Photos has attempted to repair the library, but is unable to open it"
Any experience with this problem? or suggestions?

Aug 18, 2015 1:42 PM in response to Marks71by LarryHN,AS was explained in the first answer to this question the drive must be formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) - you can not have a Photos library on a PC (NTFS) formatted drive

Aug 19, 2015 7:16 AM in response to LarryHNby Marks71,How does one format a drive Mac OS extended (journaled)? Or do I have to buy one that is already formatted that way?

Aug 19, 2015 8:40 AM in response to Marks71by Terence Devlin,You can reformat a drive with Disk Utility in your Applications/Utilities folder.
Remember that doing so will erase it.
Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture - Apple Support

(just noticed that Terence beat me in replying)

Aug 19, 2015 8:31 PM in response to jessicafromeugeneby mmcgreal,So pleased you posed this question Jessica, and the answers have helped me.
Speaking of backing up.
Does backing up (1) Photo library to iCloud, and backing up (2) the Photo library on an external disk enough to be secure and confident that photos won't be lost over time?
Also I have multiple copies of some photos, could someone suggest a good programme for finding and deleting duplicate copies.
With thanks
Maz
