Q: Safari History Not Syncing Across iCloud

I have an iPhone, iMac, and MBP. All use the same iCloud ID and all are up to date with latest software.

 

I cannot get Safari history to sync.

 

My bookmarks sync, I can use handoff between the devices, and I can see open Safari tabs on all 3 devices.

 

I have cleared history, turned Safari off/on in the iCloud settings, signed out and back into iCloud, deleted this history DB files on the Macs, rebooted.

 

The 1 thing I have not done is created a new AppleID. Whether that works or not is irrelevant as I would not be able to (or want to) use a different ID anyhow.

 

Any ideas?

    Have you done this in Settings on the devices, except for the DB part?

    Yes I have.  I have deleted history, toggled the Safari option in iCloud, and have signed out and back in on my iMac, MBP, and iPhone a couple of times.  I've rebooted several times as well.

     

    I repaired permissions on the Macs.

    Try the Linc Davis solution in this thread:

     

         Safari does not store history or sync my iCloud bookmarks

    I did see that posting, but was reluctant to simply copy/paste a command that I honestly have no idea what it does.  Is there any risk in that approach?  I don't want to adversely affect something else by trying to fi this issue.


    Also, I assume I will have to run that process on both of my Macs.

    You are wise to be cautious. The posting is probably okay because:


    • Linc Davis has a very high number of points
    • the posting has been up a couple of months and has been would have been taken down by the community by now if it had been harmful,
    • it's worked for at least one person,
    • it's been recommended by someone with a reasonably high number of points (me).

     

    Linc Davis is notable for providing very detailed instructions, but in essence, Step 1 is a quick and dirty reset the permissions of your home folder and the current temporary folder to sensible defaults. Step 2 is a more comprehensive but less convenient method of doing the the essentially same thing.

     

    Try on one Mac and if that doesn't work, try the other.

    I went through Linc Davis' step 1 procedure on both my iMac and MBP, and it did not solve the issue.  Further, I turned the Safari option off/on in iCloud settings on all 3 devices, rebooted all 3, and cleared history again.

     

    I have to believe that the problem is my underlying iCloud account as opposed to anything specific to the Macs.

    Hello jdag,

     

    Did you find a solution about your Safari History syncing issue?

    It came back to me, when I cleared the history from my Mac...

     

    Now the history sync from my iPhone to my Mac, not the other way around... weird issue. I guess time will make it work fine.

    No, I have not found a fix yet.  In fact, I contacted Apple and they have been investigating for 2 months now.  They've collected logs, had my iCloud account in troubleshooting mode, spent a couple of hours on the phone, etc.  I am pretty convinced it is my iCloud account as I am also seeing some duplicate calendar entries, and Apple support cannot explain those either.

    Hello jdag, thanks for your reply.

     

    I had the same issue as you until now, I was finding something to get my history sync back...

    My problem was between my iPhone and MacBook Pro Retina.

     

    The history wasn't syncing for 2 days, after I restored the iPhone.

    I tried to delete history many times. Nothing.

     

    This evening I try something simple, I simply delete a website from my favorites on my Mac, I checked it was also gone on the iPhone. Then I deleted another one on the iPhone this time. I checked it was also gone on the Mac. Then on the iPhone I put back the website that I deleted previously. I checked on the Mac it was also back. I did the same thing for the 2nd website on the Mac and I checked on my iPhone.

     

    For some reason, I checked the history, and all the websites on my Mac history from this morning (last time I deleted history from devices) arrived on my iPhone. Then I checked on the Mac, same thing. All the websites from this morning was on my Mac in the history.

     

    For some reason, I think that changing the favorites has impact on the history.

    Thanks for the idea.  Tried it, but no change in my history syncing.

     

    The favorites do sync.  So if I add/delete/edit from my Mac, the favorites are added/deleted/edited on my iPhone and vice versa.  It is simply that no history is syncing between my 3 devices (MBP, iMac, iPhone).

    Sad news...

     

    The only thing to solve your issue is to create a brand new iCloud ID.

    I had this issue too with an old one.

     

    At that time, I think that the switch to iCloud Drive messed up everything...

    Not surprised to hear that...and honestly, what I expected when this all started.  It is not worth it to me to make that change, so I will just not have the added feature.

    Maybe try this, a friend of mine had the same issue.

    What he did (before going to sleep) delete the history on all your devices almost at the same time, and don't use them until the next day.

     

    The next morning he told me everything was working fine by magic.

    No luck...erasing history and waiting overnight did not solve my problem.  Thanks for the idea.
