Q: iMac randomly restarts from sleep

iMac 27-inch, Late 2012

processor: 3.4GHz Intel Core i7

Memory: 24GB 1600MHz DDR3

graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2048 MB

HDD: Fusion Drive (1TB)

Yosemite 10.10.4

Hello,

I've already searched for my problem - my iMac randomly restarts on its own after sleep - but haven't find any viable solution.

The issue:

  • the computer restart on its own from sleep - this happens during daytime or night, no difference in the time of the day;
  • no problems when I shut it down (in that case it doesn't restart on its own);
  • I don't receive any "kernel panic" warning or similar messages - it just restarts
  • I can't recall an event (new app installation or similar) that might have triggered the issue
  • the iMac is connected to the same power source since I bought it (more than 2 years ago) but the problem arose in the last three months or so.

What I've already done:

  • I have reset my SMC a couple of times
  • I have reset my PRAM a couple of times
  • I ran Disk Utility and both the Disk and Permissions are fine
  • I ran Apple Hardware Test and no issues were found
  • I restarted in Safe Mode (in my account, not a guest account)
  • I uninstalled Tuxera (the app for NTFS read-write on external drives)
  • I unplugged all external HDD's (USB and Thunderbolt)
  • in System Preferences I unchecked "Wake for Network access"

but the issue is still there.

Any thoughts?
Thanks

iMac (27-inch, Late 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10.4), 24 GB RAM, Fusion Drive, 2 GB card

No, I didn't have any restarts as the system was always on since I posted the logs.

I don't remember using a USB network card, but I'm not totally sure. For sure no USB device is currently connected to the computer. I use two Thunderbolt HHD for video editing, but currently they are not connected to the iMac.

--> Activity Monitor: memory pressure is green.

What should I do with the Startupitems? delete them? All or just some of them? If so, which?

You can delete them. As far as I know, they aren't doing anything there. The OS used to use that location for things that you wanted to start at system startup or login, but that was dropped long ago in favor of the LaunchAgents and LaunchDaemons.

The HW things would have been installed for a Huwei data card.

ProTec6b may have been installed with some digital photography device or software. I think it is some type of license protection scheme. Nik software or Nalpeiron, maybe.

    Barney-15E,

again, thanks a lot for your patience, time and expertise.

I went through all the steps you suggested, including the deletion of all old StartupItems, however the problem hasn't been solved. The iMac restarts on its own every two or three hours. The unwanted reason is always the same: EC.SleepTimer (SleepTimer), as you can see from the following logs. I guess the EHC1 reason is due to the wakeup made via the keyboard or mouse.

    27/07/15 03:55:18,000 kernel[0]: Wake reason: EC.SleepTimer (SleepTimer)

    27/07/15 05:17:17,000 kernel[0]: Wake reason: EC.SleepTimer (SleepTimer)

    27/07/15 08:07:15,000 kernel[0]: Wake reason: EC.SleepTimer (SleepTimer)

    27/07/15 09:59:23,000 kernel[0]: Wake reason: EHC1

    27/07/15 12:23:13,000 kernel[0]: Wake reason: EC.SleepTimer (SleepTimer)

    27/07/15 13:48:43,000 kernel[0]: Wake reason: EHC1

    27/07/15 15:03:41,000 kernel[0]: Wake reason: EHC1

    I also got the following BOOT_TIME log: 27/07/15 08:48:40,000 bootlog[0]: BOOT_TIME 1437979720 0; yesterday I had no BOOT_TIME logs.

Should I give up or is there something else I could do?

    Many, many thanks!

Copy and post the log entries just prior to the restart (BOOT_TIME).

I'm not certain, but I think the SleepTimer is to wake it per the Power Nap feature: How Power Nap works on your Mac - Apple Support

Thanks. Anyway, the Power Nap is off on this computer since more than one year, so it shouldn't be cause of the abnormal wakeup.

That appears to have done an orderly shutdown. It doesn't look like a crash.

Do you have a schedule set?

Schedule? Do you mean Energy settings in Sysem Preferences that allow to turn on/off the computer at given times?

If so, I don't have any kind of schedule set.

Go further back in the log and see if there is any indication of what initiated shutdown.

As far as I can tell, and it wasn't exactly authoritative, a 5 means a normal shutdown commanded by the user.

    uhm... Thanks.

As, even with your great support, we were not able to find a solution, my idea is to shut down the computer at night. This would be a temporary work-around 'till the new OS (El Capitan) comes out in Fall. After the release I would make a clean install of the OS, hoping to get rid of this nuisance. Do you agree or would you suggest new and different attempts?

    Thanks, again.

I don't know what else to try besides erasing and reinstalling. Backup first.

Then use Migration assistant to move apps and users.

Wend hen initially running the startup assistant, create the first account with a name that you don't currently use so that you can migrate the old accounts cleanly.
