Q: Unable to set up Canon c5035 printer

Hi all,

I have been trying to connect to an office printer but have been unable to. This is in an all Windows environment with minimal interest from IT to help me. The printer is a Canon iR-ADV C5035 with UniFlow Secure Print activated. The printer is being shared via a print server with the address xx.xx.xx.xx/printserver (on windows you could connect to \\hostname\printserver or \\xx.xx.xx.xx\printserver).

On my Mac I'm running 10.8.2 and have installed the UFR2 V2.43 driver.

When adding the printer I do the following:

  1. In Print and Scan System Preferences, click the plus sign
  2. Select IP and provide the IP address of the printserver. Protocol is Line Printer Daemon - LPD. I then select the Canon iR-ADV C5030/5035 UFR II (UK) driver.
  3. On the Setting up <Printer Name> sheet that appears I leave the options untouched.

With the printer added I try to print. I get a message stating "The printed output may be incorrect because the printer information has not been acquired. Start Printer Utility to get this printer information" (more on that later). The queue appears and I get the following message:

Canon UFR II Printer Driver

Cannot communicate with the printer, or the printer is not supported. If the printer is supported, check the printer connection and add it again, then start Printer Utility to get the printer information.

When trying to get the Printer Information via the Printer Utility I get the same error as above, a long wait follows while printer information is gathered. I then get the following message:

May not have been able to get the printer information.

If the contents in the [Printer Information] dialog differs from the actual printer configuration, check that the printer is functioning correctly, then try again to get the printer information.

Finally Printer Information appears, stating the communication method (Unidirectional), duplex unit (available) and User inboxes (available).

So, anyone have any ideas? It should be noted that the Secure Print is using domain authentication for Windows users and then people punch in a pin code once at the printer to pick up their printed documents. Department ID is not in use as per one of our IT guys.

Many thanks for any help you are able to give.

I have a tangential question (in that it has to do with duplexing, not network issues... all though I do have one of those). I've seen it posted elsewhere, and mentioned here, that duplexing is "on" by default in UFR II settings. However, when I try to print to my imageCLASS MF4350d, the default seems to be simplex. Is there a way to change this default setting?

It is possible to change printer default settings via CUPS (https://localhost:631). Note that on newer versions of OS X access to this web page is blocked by default. To unlock the access, you need to enter the following in Terminal

    cupsctl WebInterface=yes

Then refresh the web page. With the CUPS Admin page shown, select Printers and then select the MF4350d. You will see a drop menu showing Administration. Change this to Set Default Options. Now select the General tab. Here you should see the Print Style menu. Change this from 1-sided to 2-sided and then press the Set Default Options button. You will now be prompted to authenticate. This will now set the printer to a default of two sided.

Second question, and this one really is a network question: I'm sharing this printer from my Mac Mini over a wireless network (using a Linksys/Cisco router). Even though I have all the software installed on my MacBook Pro, I cannot print duplex, no matter what I do with Print settings. Any thoughts?

So are you saying that you can select to print duplex but the machine does not print duplex? If yes, then this can be due to a mismatch of drivers on the server Mac (the Mac sharing the printer) and the client Mac. If you manually added the driver on the client instead of connecting to the share and adding, then this can be the cause.

To check the settings, on both Mac's you can open System Information (Applications > Utilities) and select Printers in the left column. If the MF is the only printer on the Mac then its information will appear in the right pane. If you have other printers, select the MF in the top right pane to see its information in the bottom right pane. The information shown here should be almost identical for both Mac's - apart from the URI entry. If you are not sure of what you are looking at then copy/paste the information for both printers back here.

Thanks so much for your quick help, PAHU. Here's the modal I keep getting:

    Canon UFR II Printer Driver

Cannot communicate with the printer, or the printer is not supported. If the printer is supported, check the printer connection and add it again, then start Printer Utility to get the printer information.

It lists in System Preferences / Printers & Scanners as paused. When I open the Canon UFRII Printer Utility and ask for Printer Information, a dialog sheet indicates that "Printing paused. Do you want to resume printing" To which I click "Resume." That's also when I see the above modal. It takes about a minute "Getting printer information...", then drops a sheet saying:

May not have been able to get the printer information.

If the contents in the [Printer Information] dialog differs from the actual printer configuration, check that the printer is functioning correctly, then try again to get the printer information.

Well, they do: the only pieces of info in the Configuration are "Communication Method: Unidirectional" and "Duplex Unit: Available". Both computers match.

I've checked that the System Info data is (as much as possible) identical. One difference I'm not sure matters is that, on the host computer (the Mac Mini to which the printer is physically connected and, ergo, shared from), "System Printer Sharing" is on, whereas on my client MBP it is not. Again, not sure if that's relevant, as I don't share the printer from the MBP.

Below is a comparison of the two printer devices described on each computer in System Information:

When I use a Generic Postscript driver, I can print, and even seem to have access to all the bells & whistles (related to printing... no scanning or faxing, but that's pretty pointless as it's on the other side of the house), but duplexing did not work. Ever. At all. Of course, that was before I was able do turn duplexing on by default (thanks for that help!)... Now that you've guided me to fixing that issue on the host, duplexing works fine from the client. But I still have to use the generic driver, as the Canon one is, as the Germans say, kaput.

So while that's not a complete solve, it is a perfectly adequate fix: I'm able to do the duplexing I want to do. Now the issue is going to be if I ever need to do simplex printing over the network. I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. Thanks again!
