Q: Dell C1760NW - Yosemite 10.10.4 Installation Issues

Hi All,

I have recently updated my iMac to 10.10.4. This was a clean install not an upgrade. I came to install the drivers for my C1760NW but I am unable to get the printer working..!

According to the Dell the C1760NW is supported on 10.10 and I have downloaded the following Driver -Printer_C1660_C1760_Installer_Dell_A03_MAC.dmg.

After running the installer I head to add the printer, the driver is not listed and OSX wants to set it up as a Generic PostScript Printer..

I have a feeling the installer is not compatible with Yosemite and is not installing the drivers correctly.

Any help would be appreciated, I will have to go back to Mavericks if I cannot resolve this as I am not going to buy a new Printer. I have phoned Dell support but they cannot figure out why this is happening and want to charge a silly sum to investigate this.

Thanks

I don't really know which post to respond to, so I will post here.

There is a way to get the PPDs without PAHU mailing them you.  It is rather geeky, but that is part of the fun.

Grab the installers if you haven't already done so and mount the disk image.  Look in the MacOSX10.7- folder, then in the Packages folder.  You will find the file Dell C1760 C1660 Print Installer.pkg.  That is the file we will start with.

Open the Terminal (/Applications/Utilities).  We need an empty folder to work with, so let's make a folder "inflate".  At the Terminal prompt, enter

    mkdir ~/inflate

and hit the Enter key.  That will create a directory "inflate" in your Home folder.  Next we want to tell the Terminal to use that directory.  Enter

    cd ~/inflate

    and hit the Enter key.

Now we will inflate that installer file so we can work with it.  In the Terminal enter the command

xar -xf   make sure there is a space after -xf.

Now drag the Dell C1760 C1660 Print Installer.pkg file onto the Terminal window.  It will fill in the compete path to the file.  Hit the Enter key.

Next, go to inflate you created earlier in your Home folder.  Find the file  installation files.pkg.  Right-click (Control-click) on that file and choose Show Package Contents.  You should now see four files.  Right-click (Control-Click) on Payload and choose the option to Open with > Other...  That will bring up a navigation window.  The application you want to choose is /System/Library/CoreServices/Applications/Archive Utility.  Select that application and hit the Open button.  The files will magically expand and you will find a folder Library with all the Dell files and the PPDs.

Well, that may not be as easy as asking PAHU to mail you the PPDs, but it is something you can do without exposing your e-mail address or waiting for PAHU and his good nature to send you the files.

    Hi,

you are describing the exact same problem in this thread that I have with my Dell on 10.10.4. Purchased it a few days ago but it won't appear in the drivers list, just as described. I have no pre-10.10.4 system around. Could you please email the ppd to me, too?

best regards and many thanks in advance,

    Klaus

I think I can make this more user friendly.

Double click on the disk image you downloaded from Dell.  This will mount the disk image.  Then open the Terminal (/Applications/Utilities).  Copy and past the following into the Terminal window and hit the Enter key.  The PPDs should appear in the folder inflate that was created in your Home directory.  I hope I can get the formatting for this forum correct.  It should all be on one line.  Enjoy.

    mkdir ~/inflate; cd ~/inflate; xar -xf /Volumes/Dell\ C1760\ C1660\ Installer/MacOSX10.7-/Packages/Dell\ C1760\ C1660\ Print\ Installer.pkg; /System/Library/CoreServices/Applications/Archive\ Utility.app/Contents/MacOS/Archive\ Utility  ~/inflate/installationfiles.pkg/Payload; cp -R ~/inflate/installationfiles.pkg/Library/Printers/PPDs PPDs

EDIT: I was able to confirm that the code got formatted correctly and it works as intended.

Important change. The newest drivers package doesn't work with the extract method.

    Go to: http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=W2RYN

Install from that DMG. It will be blocked and you will need to go to system preferences --> Security & Privacy -- > General and approve the install to run. Works right out of the box from there

You are correct in saying the installer you refer to does not work with the extract script cited above.  It would work with a modified extract script.

The driver you are pointing to, however, is not the newest.  The driver package you cite is from 2012.  The one being worked on in this thread is from 2015.  That being said, the older installer may indeed work.  Are you running OS X 10.10.4?  We were dealing with a particular installer failing with a particular point release of OS X 10.10.

I am on 10.10.4 and just received the printer 2 days ago. The driver from 2015 from dells web site / the cd does not work with the extract method. What my post states is that the extract method does NOT work with the newest driver and that rather than going through this extract method or anything else, just going to the older driver works on 10.10.4

I just downloaded the newest driver and ran into the same problems as above. Extracting does work, but in a different way:

Go to a tmp or downloads dir or something like that. Run this command to extract the files from the pkg file:

    pkgutil --expand /Volumes/Dell\ C1760\ C1660\ Installer/MacOSX10.7-/Packages/Dell\ C1760\ C1660\ Print\ Installer.pkg c1760

This will create a dir 'c1760'. Now execute the following commands to extract the installation files:

    cd c1760/installationfiles.pkg

    mv Payload Payload.gz

    gzip -d Payload.gz

    cpio -i < Payload

Now you have a dir 'Library' which contains all the installations files, including the PPD files. Copy them to /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources and add your printer as usual. No need to reset the printing system, it found them on the first try.

If anyone is having issues extracting, send my your emails and I'll send you the PPDs.

I emailed Dell support about this again!
