Q: iMac OS X Version 10.9.5    Processor 2.7 GHz;    4 GB memory    1333 MHz I joined an online art class but when I tried to play a video, the message "unsupported media" was displayed.  How can I get the videos to play on my computer?

    What is the format of the video?  You may be trying to view a pro video format that you cannot use without the correct software, such as discussed in: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204322

    You do not say which app you are trying to use to play the video and/or if you tried other video playing apps.

     

    Please detail ALL you have done so far in the way of troubleshooting?   Need this info to avoid the been there done that scenarios.

    I read the article but I am not literate enough in computer terminology to understand it.  I went to the app store to look for something that would view a pro video format but I did not really know enough to choose anything.  Thank you for your response to my question.

    I did not use an app - I have watched the tutorials offered from the art program on youtube with no problem.  Therefore, I thought it would be that easy for the classes after I signed up.  I found the question I needed on the art tutor site and tried to download different browsers that they recommended to try - Firefox and Google Chrome.  When I was unable to download Firefox, I tried Google but got the same message each time:  an SSL error has occurred and a secure connection . . .(I could not get the rest of the message).  As is pretty evident, I am not computer savvy.  If you can recommend an app that might work, I would appreciate it.

    Try a restart.

     

    Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.

     

    Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

     

    Isolating an issue by using another user account

     

    If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.
