Q: Windows 8.1 install on iMac with fusion drive, GPT partition error

Hello,

I have been trying to install windows via bootcamp on my iMac and cannot seem to fix the 'Windows cannot be installed to this disc. The selected disc is of the GPT partition style' error.I have a late 2013 model iMac with a 1TB fusion drive. I am currently running OSX Mavericks and I am trying to instal Windows 8.1 using a USB connected superdrive. I am using bootcamp assistant to download the windows drivers and partition the drive. The target size of the Windows partition is about 40GB.

I am successfully completing all steps until I am in the Windows install and select the partition on which Windows should be installed. I get the error 'Windows cannot be installed to this disc. The selected disc is of the GPT partition style.' I have formatted the partition, but I still get the same error. The bootcamp partition is disk1s4.

Can anyone recommend what I can do to overcome this issue? I've been searching for an answer and have tried reformatting within disk utility and cannot get past this step. Thank you in advance!

Please download GPT Fdisk from http://sourceforge.net/projects/gptfdisk/

Can you post the output of the following Terminal commands?

    diskutil list

    diskutil cs list

sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk1

    sudo fdisk /dev/disk1

The "sudo" commands will prompt for your password, and it will not be echoed back. You may also see a warning about improper use of "sudo" and potential data loss due to "abuse" of the command.

Please use GPT Fdisk (gdisk) to execute the following steps and test.

Rebuild MBR to match the new GPT information thus resetting the Hybrid MBR. Use defaults for other questions (like partition codes). The only values that need modifications are the Boot flags and step 10. Accept all other defaults that Gdisk offers.

    1. Sudo gdisk /dev/disk1
    2. P  (Print list of parts)
    3. R  (Recover)
    4. H (chooses Hybrid)
    5. O (print current Hybrid MBR)
    6. Partitions numbers to be hybridized: 2 3 4
    7. Y  (Good for GRUB question)
    8. N  (part 2 boot flag)
    9. N  (part 3 boot flag)
    10. Y  (part 4 boot flag make NTFS bootable partition)
    11. O  (print current Hybrid MBR)
    12. W (Write the new MBR)
    13. Y (Yes! write the new MBR)
    14. Reboot

Here is sample Q&A for this section. Please notice the Press Enter/Return.

Place EFI GPT (0xEE) partition first in MBR (good for GRUB)? (Y/N): Y

Creating entry for GPT partition #2 (MBR partition #2)

Enter an MBR hex code (default AF): Press Enter/Return

Set the bootable flag? (Y/N): N

Creating entry for GPT partition #3 (MBR partition #3)

Enter an MBR hex code (default AB): Press Enter/Return

Set the bootable flag? (Y/N): N

Creating entry for GPT partition #4 (MBR partition #4)

Enter an MBR hex code (default 07): Press Enter/Return

Set the bootable flag? (Y/N): N

Will this work for El Capitan and Windows 10?

I'm got a MBP with a "home made" Fusion Drive (500gb Apple SSD, and 2TB HD, Fused together).

Been banging my head against the wall trying to get Boot Camp and Win 10 to work together, and the last thing I want to do is screw-up my OSX Partition.

    Thanks in Advance!!!

Please start a new discussion, and post the year/model of your Mac (not the serial number), and the output of the following commands on the new discussion

    diskutil list

    diskutil cs list

sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0

    sudo fdisk /dev/disk0

The "sudo" commands will prompt for your password, and it will not be echoed back. You may also see a warning about improper use of "sudo" and potential data loss due to "abuse" of the command.

I had the same problem with 3TB fusion drive until i found this link: https://www.27partners.com/2012/12/how-to-install-boot-camp-on-a-3tb-fusion-driv e-mac/

I was able to successfully install Windows 10 on my iMac 5K.
