Q: Why is the new Photos app so slow on my Mac?

Why is the new Photos app so slow on my Mac.  Have all the latest updates. Takes 10-15 minutes for my photos to load overtime I open the app.  Frozen while they are loading.  They are all on my computer. Not coming from the cloud.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

You really should not hijack someone else thread

Actually Shannon864 is the originator of this topic.   Were you addressing emanwine?

Thank you Old Toad. I did both those things

What two things.  I don't see where I replied to you before in this topic.  If you're referring to a post I directed at another user in this topic you have to spell out what you tried so we're all on the same page.

Even better always start your own topic where you can spell out your problems and get undivided attention.l

Thank you for your time Old Toad. You were my last hope to resolving this issue.

Image Capture has given me some piece of mind as all 6k pics from my last successful import has been saved to Photos.

My last video import was 7/3/15. Anyone have suggestions for a work around? I have been emailing myself videos from my iPhone and downloading to my Mac.

    Thanx in advance,

anyone have suggestions for a work around?

    Try the following:

1 - launch the Terminal application.

2 - copy and paste the following command into the Terminal window followed buy the Retrun or Enter key:

    sudo /usr/libexec/xpchelper --rebuild-cache

This just forces the recreation of "com.apple.xpchelper.cache".

3 - you'll be asked to enter your Admin password.

4 - reboot your Mac and try again.

Old Toad, you seem to be the person to ask.  I'm not running any other programs and yet my computer is heated up when I use Photos, and the program is running slow.  Any advice would be great!

To make helping you much easier start a new topic and include details the problems you're having with Photos, i.e. launching, searching, editing, when the spinning wheel appears, etc.

Old Toad, the issue with me goes like this.  When the photos app is open, everything is slowly and it runs slowly.  On my Mac, which is older the iPhoto now disappeared and the white circle with the line appeares when I search for it.  Photo Booth as well.  I have LOTS of pictures.  Probably 10,000.

I also have a newer MacBook Air.  When I updated my OS on that, I have BOTH iPhoto and the new Photos APP.  Why is it there and not on my Mac?

New Photos app is slow and slowing everything else down.

I also have a newer MacBook Air.  When I updated my OS on that, I have BOTH iPhoto and the new Photos APP.  Why is it there and not on my Mac?

I have no idea because I don't know what you have on those Macs before you upgraded to Yosemite.  The MacBook Air was probably new enough that you were able to update iPhoto to the 9.5.1 and then to 9.6.1.

As for the memory issues there's nothing obvious to me in the report.  I suggest you run Etrecheck while using iPhoto and it's running slow.  Also run Activity Monitor and check the memory usage during that same time.

Have you tried creating a test library, run it and see if the slowness is still present?

Hi there!  Exact same problem.  Here's the EtreCheck info.  I just switched to a Mac after using a Dell for years so I'm still a little confused.  I can read, but please be gentle!

Old Toad, I'd appreciate it if you could have a look at mine as well. As soon as I open Photos, the whole system chugs along, sometimes you can't even use it for 4-5 minutes at a time?

    Problem description:

New Photos app for Yosematie slows entire system to the point it is unuseable.

You've also installed some very serious malware:

    Launch Daemons: ℹ️

        [loaded]    com.macpaw.CleanMyMac2.Agent.plist [Click for support

    User Launch Agents: ℹ️

        [loaded]    com.macpaw.CleanMyMac2Helper.diskSpaceWatcher.plist [Click for support]

        [loaded]    com.macpaw.CleanMyMac2Helper.trashWatcher.plist [Click for support]

Follow my instructions above regarding uninstalling CMM2 and confirming that you've got all of the files.  Reboot and try again.

Also where is you library located?  If it's on an external HD how is that HD formatted?

You might want to reconsider using Chrome as your browser after reading this: Google Chrome Listening In To Your Room Shows The Importance Of Privacy Defense In Depth.

Google is known to "phone home" with users data as was found out with this new Google Photos service:  Google Photos may be free — but there's still a cost.

    Just some food for thought.

Where is your library located?  If on an external HD how is that drive formatted.  As a test launch Photos with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it?

OK, I removed the CMM2 from the system, rebooted.... still same problem with the Photos running soooo slooooow (but thanks so much for noticing that the CMM2 had malware attached to it!)

My Library is located on an internal HD, but the system boots from a second SSD. Could this be the problem if the Photos software is on the SSD and the Library is on the other HD??? Otherwise I'm at a loss for what to do.

Far more likely that CleanMyMac has so corrupted the system drive that only solution is to erase it and start over again.

It is known to do beside contain all the other malware attached to it.
