Q: Yosemite and Wifi - the drama continues

This is what I entered four days ago:

I downloaded Yosemite yesterday - kicking and screaming. When my iPhoto albums would no longer appear on my iPhone I bit the bullet. Now I'm paying the piper. Slow internet, zero HTML, zero videos, zero images. I spent the better part of a day walking through the various solutions offered, getting all excited and then…nada.

This is what I wrote today:

This is so discouraging. Safari won't open because of secure connections. After a dozen restarts it connects. Youtube still struggles with videos. Images take forever (or never!) to appear. One minute, lightning speed, next literal minute, dial up. Many insightful helps yet none have worked. I have now lost almost three days work trying to fix this. Now I go to an Apple Store, give them my laptop for three days, and pay a nice chunk of change so that I can enjoy the wonderful upgrade of Yosemite.

What I have heard is that "95% of Yosemite users now have no problems." I have the feeling there is a very simple problem/bug that is keeping me from having this nightmare. Laptop goes in Monday or Tuesday. I am seriously considering going back to Mavericks.

I downloaded Yosemite on my late 2009 MacBook Pro.  I had downloaded Yosemite on my 2013 iMac and have no issues.  I should have read the reviews!  Spinning rainbow is the most often sighted icon since!  Went to Apple Genius Bar; all hardware ok.  The guy at the Apple Store basically told me (not in so many words) that Yosemite is not for my MacBook.  Suggested I upgrade my memory from 2GB to 4GB.  He also suggested I try the beta release of Apple next OS - El Capitane, but with this many issues in Yosemite, I am reluctant to try anything new.  I have now visited other stores and spoken to their tech guys.  Most say Yosemite not for older computers.  Try upgrading memory to 8GB and switching to SSD from installed HDD.  I am now looking to uninstall Yosemite and reinstall Mavericks.  Then I will upgrade Memory and may upgrade the HDD to SSD, but this is not as easy as it is made out to be.

My suggestion is to uninstall Yosemite and reinstall Mavericks and am now going to find out how to.

    Good Luck!

You just made my day!! Thanks SO much. A friend just yesterday casually mentioned I should upgrade from 2 to 4GB. Zing! I'll report back.

If you can add above 4 GB RAM, that would be even better.

The 2 places I’ve seen recommended most to buy reliable RAM are below. I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I now have 6GB installed on a early 2008 iMac supposedly limited to 4 GB and noticed an improvement.

Eric, THANK YOU for the help! Quick question from a techno-challenged senior. I went to buy some memory from OWC. Showing my ignorance, I find that I have a 9.1 model, Intel Core i5, with 1 processor, 2 cores and 1.3 GHz while every model for my year says 2.5. Am I supposed to multiply that twice because of two "cores" - whatever that means? Just want to make sure I have all the right stuff before buying memory. And, while I'm at it, I did find that I have 4GB of RAM, not 2. How much RAM would you recommend I buy?

Again, thank you, and MP 17... for all your help!

You are welcome. Contact OWC about which RAM to buy just to make sure you get the correct RAM. 8 GB should be plenty unless you do a lot of video work.

Eric, what I did find out, unfortunately, is that there is no memory upgrades for Macbook Air

I went back to OS X Lion and my MacBook Pro went back to almost normal.

I also installed 8GB RAM to replace the OEM 2 GB RAM and the MacBook is faster!

I bought the RAM from OWC and recommend them.

Sorry you cannot upgrade RAM but going back to Mavericks will help, Tom.

Do a backup, preferably 2 separate ones on 2 separate drives.

Revert to a Previous OS X - Yosemite

Revert to former OS from Mavericks

    Revert Yosemite to Mavericks

If you do revert, I'd use Setup Assistant to restore your data. This process takes a while, so do it when you won't need the computer for several hours, based on my experience.

I have a macbook pro retina (mid 2014) which ran Mavericks and updated to Yosemite without any wifi issues...

However, now recently there was an apple update and my wifi is behaving very poor.... I have no idea what causes this (wifi will not reconnect). What I did observer was that there was no com.apple.discoveryd.plist file in /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/.

There was a backed up file (com.apple.discoveryd_bc.plist) but there was no replacement, renaming the backup to plist did not solve the problem. Anybody have some experience here?

You might want to consider starting a new discussion. Since this one is marked solved, less people are likely to look at it. You can link to this one.

    Try running the combo update.

OS X 10.10.4 update has replaced discovered service with previously used (in previous OS X versions) mDNSResponder and that probably is the reason why com.apple.discovery.plist was renamed to com.apple.discoveryd_bc.plist. It is not recommended to change or delete manually any files is /System folder.

Do you get any error messages when you are trying to reconnect to your WiFi? When is this occurring: after system startup, restart, after sleep?

If you haven't done this yet, try to create a new Network Location and check if that makes any difference: Using network locations (Mac OS X v10.6 and later) - Apple Support

IWOO, many thank for your response and instructions. I have finally learned how to successfully get back to Mavericks without losing anything. There is a god! I'm am going to sit in Mavericks for as long as Apple will let me. Kind of like, "Write Now". LOL!!
