Q: How do you "un-share"?

Currently I share my iTunes account with my kids. Now that they are teens, I want them to have their own accounts so that they can do their own phone back-ups and handle their own music.

Last night we tried setting up the first one but my music library is still showing up in her iTunes. It also keeps asking something about authorizing.

Ideally, I would like just their music to be showing up in their music library. Is there a way to make that happen?

    Good day KathySWM1,

My understanding is that up until now, your children have used your Apple ID for their iTunes music, TV, movie and app purchases but you wish to set each of them up with their own Apple IDs for future use. You also want them to have access to their past purchases under your Apple ID, and you want them to be able to back up their own iPhones. Is that correct?

In order to do what you want, we are going to have to use a few different steps. I have these outlined below but it will use Family Sharing, setting up the kids with their own Apple IDs, and having different user accounts for each of you on your computer.

Family Sharing is Apple's way of addressing the needs of family groups for keeping control where needed and allowing access where possible to various Apple services, including purchases. This article is an overview of Family Sharing - Family Sharing.

This article tells how to get started with Family Sharing - Set up Family Sharing.

For any child 13 years or older, skip this section - (note - this age may vary by location.)

If a child is under 13 years old, their Apple ID must be created by a parent and must be part of a Family Sharing group. This article tells how to create and manage Apple IDs for your younger children - Family Sharing and Apple IDs for kids.

Older children and adults can set up their own Apple IDs, and may optionally be part of a Family Sharing group. Creating an Apple ID is addressed in this help page - Create and start using an Apple ID.

To join a family group, use this article - Set up Family Sharing - see the section titled Invite people to join your family.

In order to keep music libraries separate on your computer, I would recommend that each family member have their own account on that computer. You do not mention what operating system you have on your Mac, but the procedure is similar for all recent versions. This article gives an overview of creating a new account on your Mac - OS X Mountain Lion: Create a new user account

Previous purchases made under your Apple ID would normally all be available to other members of the family group. You may want to keep some purchases private. See this article on how to hide purchases - Hide and unhide purchases in the iTunes Store.

To back up an iPhone you can use either iTunes on the computer or iCloud. This article tells how to use each - How to back up your devices using iCloud or iTunes.

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

    Safe computing.
