I think it may have been the connection between the Time Warner supplied modem and my NetGear router.
Changed cabling from the router to the modem. The new modem has 4 cat 5 ports while my older modem only had a single port.
Moved the cable from port 5 to port 1. It seems to be working OK now. At least for the past 2 days.
It it fails again I'll take your suggestion on the wireless diagnostics.
