Q: iPhone acts odd, crazy, touch screen, random behavior, while charging

This post only addresses iPhone acting up while charging and using the device.

Problem:

I have a cord and wall charger I take with me in my laptop case. It charges the iPhone fine, but... when I attempt to use the iPhone while it charges on this cord the touch sreen responds CRAZY, or RANDOM, like an invisible finger is pressing another area of the screen.

I can not consistantly or hardly OPEN the device by "slide to unlock" .... most of the time it actually ZOOMs in like the 3 Finger touch.

ONLY when I unplug the phone can I "slide to unlock"  and have normal use of phone.

Troubleshooting:

We have 5 Apple devices I tried all the Cords with all wall Plugs...

Solution:

Turns out that we some how have a Wall Plug that doesn' appear to be "Designed by Apple in CA"

All the other plugs either have an Apple Logo or state "Designed by Apple in CA"

...This one that doesn't work properly has the same model #'s and voltage written on the face, but says "Power Adapter made in China"

It Charges fine but, must have a grounding issue or something that causes the touch screen to respond Crazy & Odd.

I Marked this one with a sharpie marrker "X", we just use it to Charge as a last resort.

If you have similar issues this could be your best bet....test it yourself with another cord or wall plug.

iPod touch, Windows XP

Also turn off "imessage" from SETTINGS - that's the better fix according to a helpful Verizon rep.  I have gravity sensor back on now & it seems fine.

Actually found that turning off imessage (from Settings) is the better fix.  Just use data for texts...

I Created an account to let everyone know that disabling imessage did work for me as I had the same problem as described in this thread. I also have iMessage enable as well and do not have the problem anymore. What I did was disable imessage as  "franamo" stated above (problem still acurred). Let the phone sit for 10-15 minutes on sleep mode. I logged into my phone and enable iMessage, and the problem was gone. That's it. Hopefully this helps someone.

Ps: The problem accured after I did the update to my iPhone 6 plus. This was happening even if the phone was not plugged into the charger. But now it's fixed

    Thanks franamo

UPDATE !!!!!! The above fix did not work. The problem is back. Like I stated above. This started happening after the recent update. I will be visiting the Apple Store tomorrow.

Just visit the Apple Store and have them replace your screen under warranty. This made me happy again and no problem at all since then. Good luck

This is really interesting. I recently moved my workshop into an old warehouse in Queens. Almost all of the electrical work had to be pulled out and redone (save for the panel). I noticed immediately after spending time in there that my iPhone6 would act VERY weird whenever plugged in. It would charge, but usually when I touched the screen it would act like it had it's own agenda. It didn't matter what charger, cord, whatever, AND OTHER SMART PHONES acted strange too (including a samsung). This happened even with new outlets installed.

Today we grounded the electrical panel to earth (this was done with an 8-foot-long grounding rod driven into the ground—which should have been in place already) and the problem seems to have disappeared.

So if you're having this problem, maybe you have a grounding issue! It could be the device itself, the charger, or the actual electrical supply!?

The other thing to mention is that this building is very close to a 50k watt AM radio station, and I wondered if the lack of ground in the electrical supply combined with residual (induced?) current from the station could have caused this erratic behavior.

Any electrical engineers out there wanna take a stab at this?

I've had the same problem since about the second week of owning the phone I noticed one until about one bar of reception it triggers this crazy possession not always know when it first happened to me I didn't have the phone plugged in I can have it happen in different locations in different cities that show me one bar of reception and somehow it triggers perhaps  because it's struggling with cell connection not sure but when I put it in airplane mode the problem goes away when I turn it off airplane mode in that same location it comes right back.   I've also had it happen when it was plugged in but that's not the only time.   Because I do development as well I was able to submit a bug report to Apple which their engineers looked at all my video footage that I created and my logs and then they said your book report is closed maybe you should think about taking it to a service facility.   I'm currently escalating the problem I'm working with an advisor I was able to duplicate the same problem on my father-in-law's iPhone 6 Plus

I Have the exact same problem. Gravity sensor and imessage fix dis not work for me. I have been using my charger for a few months since i bought the phone with no problem. Until recently. I thought it was just my phone. But then i had the same problem almost at the same time as my ipad air. Using the original charger as well, it wont respond properly when connected to it. Both my phone and ipad works fine with a third party charger! But bot with their original charger! Weird huh? I dont know if its because of the latest update. All i know is they we're working fine with these chargers until 2 days ago.

My iPhone 5s used to react as if more than one finger were administered on the screen while long pressing the screen (could be easily noticed while rearranging the icons in the homescreen). I had this problem while I was charging my phone (original charger) and was using a hard case for my 16 GB iPhone 5s. I tried charging the phone without the hard case and it worked perfectly. I then put on a silicon cover and now also it works perfectly.

Does anyone on here have an Otterbox phone cover?  I've found that the touchscreen on my iPhone 6 is being randomly accessed because it's sensitivity is so high.  When I removed my Otterbox everything works fine.

Can't wait to get rid of this piece of garbage when my current contract expires.  First iphone5 had to be replaced because it didn't ring.  I was on an oncall job at the time, lost thousands of dollars and almost got fired.  Took three visits to the apple store and being very irate to get it replaced.

Now it acts crazy on the charger.  Updating is ****.

That generally means the charging cable has gone bad. Try a different one.

Same phone, same computer - and same issue just started.

I wonder if its the cable and/or the lightening port - as for the last 2 days I've been plugging the phone in either to the laptop, or to a wall charger and it's not necessarily started charging.

    iPhone 6

    Apple Charging Cords

    Recently downloaded iOS 9.0.2

    Verizon

First happened while typing a text message and first app it accessed was LINE all while NOT plugged in to anything.

Happened to me for the first time today.  Phone was NOT plugged in and was at about 80% charge according to battery icon on phone screen.  I was trying to send a text message and the phone kept leaving messages and opening other apps.  Phone opened maps, flashlight, contacts, line, viber, mail and opened the same email numerous times, swiped left and started typing in the search bar, etc.  Within mail (I have 4 mail accounts) it would switch mail accounts, open the inbox, and open a message.  Within the LINE app it switched from "Chats" to "Contacts" opened a contact and started typing a message.  I have 3 pages of apps and the "touches" were happening all over the screen and included swipes both to the left and the right.

I turned airplane mode on and ALL of the "ghost touching" stopped.

Hard rebooted the phone and turned airplane mode off and it started happening again.

Signed out of apple account and it stopped.

Stayed out of apple account until I got to a computer, signed into apple account via computer and changed password, signed into apple account on phone with new password and so far (2 hours later) no more "ghost touching."

I also have an iPad 2, iPad air and iPad mini which I have not updated to 9.0.2 and have never had any problems.

Hard to believe this is a hardware issue if turning airplane mode on makes it stop and other people switching phones (hardware) doesn't solve the issue.

I Have been having the "ghost clicking" problem on 5 different iPhone 6s Plus iPhones in my house!  I finally figured it out!  We have a metal roof and the tempered glass screen protectors that I bought for my phone, my wife's phone and our 3 teenagers phones all had some type of metal edging so when we got into the car or near any metal buildings our iPhones went crazy!  Calling People on thier own texting surfing the net ect!  I Took my screen protector off and no more problems- I bet this also applies if you have any type of metal case!  So glad it's fixed I was ready to throw a $500 iPhone out the car window!
