Q: Photos & Sony DSC RX100 MK4 RAW (ARW) File Compatibility

Hi there,

I just received the new RX100iv form Sony and shoot RAW Only. When I import the files using Photos, I seem to only get the small thumbnails. Double clicking on a thumbnail gives me a giant gray triangle with an exclamation mark inside it. It seems Photos doesn't recognize the Sony format.

Please help me fix that.

Next, I converted the ARWs to DNGs using Lightroom, and edited the DNG files. I then dragged the DNG files into Photos. The DNG files showed with the correct crop/pixel edits, however immediately shortly after, the DNG files reverted back to their unedited state, as if once they were uploaded to the Photos cloud, apple kicked back an unedited version of the DNG file, making me lose all the work I did in Light room.

Please let me know what the best workflow is to use Sony DSCRX100 RAW/ARW files with Photos.

The raw files from that camera are not compatible with Yosemite or Photos at this time: OS X Yosemite: Supported digital camera RAW formats - Apple Support. You'll have to wait until the RAW compatibility updater addressing that particular camera is released by Apple.

In the meantime you can try using the Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter : For Macintosh and use .dng files with Photos. Download from the camera to a folder on the Desktop, convert to .dng and then import into Photos.

Or just shoot the highest recolution jpegs that the camera will produce.

I wonder whether Sony did not supply any software together with the camera you bought. I know Canon does (Digital Photo Professional) for its cameras.
I also see that you have tried Lightroom. Is that the latest Lightroom (LR6 or LR CC) that might already be able to interpret the RAW files from your new camera?
Instead of dragging the processed files from Lightroom to Photos, have you tried defining Photos as external editor in Lightroom and then picking Edit in... Photos from the Photo menu.
