Q: iPhone 6 Siri won't work, neither dictation!!

I don't know what's wrong, since 3 days i can't get siri to hear me, i press the home button to summon siri, the wave line moves a lot as if it was receiving a lot of noise and then goes off as if didn't recognize anything, i've tried everything, turning siri on/off, reseting phone, reseting settings, i've checked the discussions and there doesn't seem to be any solution to this.siri does work if i use the earphone set that came with the iphone, but clearly there's a problem, and 3 days ago worked just fine!!!

Add me to the list of people with this problem.  Voice Memo works fine, but Siri doesn't hear me, and keyboard dictation microphone doesn't work.

Just did a reboot (home button and power button) and now it works again. I'm afraid the problem will come back, though.

Having the same problem. The only problem seems to be Siri and Voice dictation. Regular voice commands without Siri works perfectly, voice memos, calls, etc all fine. Unfortunately 8.4 has not fixed the problem. Hopefully with the next update it will be fixed. Really do not want to replace my phone for a software issue.

I am also having same issue.  Tried everything recommended.  Siri and dictation does not work but phone calls work, other apps hear me clearly, etc.  If I use my ear buds it works fun.  I am not sure if there are two mics in the iphone 6.  I did notice that when I take video if I have it on the camera on back the sound is fine, but if I take a front video the audio has high background noise and my voice is so faint it can't be heard.  I was doing these tests in a very quiet room so there was no background noise.  I also made sure there is nothing blocking the mic.

Hopefully Apple responds to this with something other than the usual troubleshooting steps that we have all tried.  I am on the latest iOS and I know Siri was working fine approx a month ago.

I am not convinced it is a hardware issue unless they have two mics and Siri/dictation and the front camera all use it while other apps use the other.

Can others verify my front camera sound test and let me know what yo experience?

Come on Apple, reply with someone that knows something.

Do you have a Bluetooth device connected to it? My dictation would not work when my Bluetooth headset was connected. I disconnected and bingo, I had dictation again.

No, I do not have any Bluetooth connected.  I actually went and disabled bluetooth to make sure.  It still has the issue.

I just fixed the problem after months of no Siri and no dictation.

I began to think it had something to do with headphones and Bluetooth. Mine would work with the Bluetooth connection in the car. Others reported it working with a headset microphone when plugged into the headphone jack.

I blew compressed air into the headphone jack and Siri was back immediately.

I'm having the same issues, both with iOS 8.4 and public beta of iOS 9.

I made a list so that everyone can check and see if they are indeed facing the same issue:

    NOT WORKING:

    *DICTATION

    *SIRI

    *FACETIME

    *SPEAKERPHONE (Mic only)

    *VIDEOS in 'selfie' MODE

    WORKING:

    *VIDEOS IN NORMAL MODE

    *VOICE MEMOES

    *NORMAL CALL

    *APPS (i.e YOUTUBE etc.)

    *VOICE CONTROL (when disabling Siri)

This issue is a nightmare, and for sure isn't related to a hardware problem, as many other uses of the Microphone are working just fine.

I personally tried to work with both iOS 8.4 and iOS 9 (until Public Beta 3) and couldn't solve it. Cleaning iPhone, restoring, resetting, disabling, enabling, blowing air, tapping on the phone - nothing helped so far.

Sorry, actually speakerphone mic does work for me after disabling noise cancellation feature on accessibility.

So, the compressed air in the headphone jack was either a coincidence or a temporary fix.  The problem returned shortly thereafter.

I installed iOS beta 9 today. Siri, dictation, etc. have now worked for several hours. Certainly the longest stretch of time since this problem developed. Although, Siri does not seem to hear or understand me as well as on my iPad. I have to speak more clearly, loudly and slowly and still it only catches what I am saying about  50% of the time.

Guys, this is very important you should all read this:

After spending hours of research on the internet I have found a very interesting read, mentioning that Siri and Dictation are functioning through ANOTHER microphone, next to the front-facing camera. So, the problem is indeed a hardware problem. At least it was for me, so I replaced the proximity cable (which includes front-facing camera and mic) and it fixed the problem!

To test this do the following:

    1. Test if there's any signal wave when using Siri and Dictation

    2. Take a front-facing video, and then play it and listen if you hear any audio.

*If there is audio, it must be a software issue - try disabling Siri and Dictation, and then do a power off power on or reset. If that doesn't work you can try to reset to factory setting. If there's no audio move on to step 3:

    3. No audio at all? As mentioned above you are most likely facing a hardware problem, which is a faulty proximity cable. This means the mic next to the front-facing camera (which is used by Siri and Dictation too) is faulty.

    The solution:

Take it to Apple and replace it, if you can. You can also replace it on your own, the part is cheap, but the replacement process is pretty difficult, and you could be creating other issues, so be warned.

Here is the part on Ebay's listing

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/261898279994?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=S TRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

    Here's how to do it:

    https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPhone+5+Front-Facing+Camera+and+Sensor+Cable+Repla cement/10896

This has also helped me to replace the part.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5CSiQLULjc

It is odd as for me the whole issue happened suddenly when dictation stopped working, but when I opened the phone I saw an open screw and things were loose, I replaced it and everything seems to be ok now.

Once again - doing this is at your own risk, it took me a few hours to replace it and after doing this I had a few more issues so it took me another hour to re-fix it and make sure everything's in place. It might be better to take it to Apple, or a local repair shop.

    Hope that helps.

    Good luck guys!

So I wanted to update since this is still such a problem for so many people. I had tried everything except going to the Apple store to fix this (I really didn't want to replace my phone). the speech dictation for texts and siri were not working, although phone calls, speaker phone, voice recorder, videos on both cameras, and regular nonsiri voice controls worked fine. This stopped working for me about a month ago and no iOS updates or anything fixed it. I happened to accidentally hit the voice dictation button the other day, and it worked!! Out of nowhere it just started working again without me having done ANYTHING. So I turned siri back on as well and it worked just fine too. So for me, it fixed itself if you can call it that. I have no idea what the real problem could be but I highly doubt it is a hardware problem. But if it is a software problem, I don't understand why it would work again with no update. I am also not at all versed In software or any of that kind of stuff. I just wanted to share my experience and give some people some hope that it may start working again.

Mine started working better with iOS 9. It works sometimes and then later it doesn't and then it will work again. I have no idea why it seems so sporadic and random. With iOS 8.4 it never worked after it stopped. It's a complete mystery to me.

It would appear that this is the issue with my iPhone 5C, which suffered a significant shock when dropped a month or two ago despite having a Speck case.  When it happened, the upper edge of the display panel had separated from the colored shell, so much so that light was coming out the top edge and upper corners.  Phone still worked fine as far as I could tell at the time.  I carefully pressed the display and shell back together, snapped the Speck case back in place, and carried on.  The display however, protrudes at the upper end in so far as it can be pressed down/squeezed ever so slightly against the shell. More recently, Siri has altogether stopped working after a progressive degradation since the drop noted above.  Siri works with other mics attached (e.g. headset or bluetooth). Siri will also work in the normal mode, but only when I squeeze down firmly on the display in one of the upper corners, suggesting that an electrical contact has become open-circuited. Of course, this defeats the purpose of "Hey Siri", but at least it confirms a hardware fault.
