Q: Problem connecting on video chat AIM account/Messages

I've recently upgraded to a new iMac (27" Retina, 3.5ghz i5). I'm running Yosemite 10.10.3.

After years of successful and problem-free video chatting with family using an AIM account with Messages (and iChat before that), I'm suddenly having connection issues.

Curiously, I'm able to connect on my first attempt of the day. The video and audio work wonderfully, the chat can go on as long as desired, etc.

With every subsequent attempt to connect, the video chat will *not* connect.

I've deleted and re-added my aim account multiple times. Clearly my router is allowing the video chatting since a) I never had a problem in 8+ years previously with several different macs and b) I am even able to connect on this Mac, albeit intermittently.

I would welcome any advice.

    Hi,

    same problem here,

test on local lan ok between iChat 5.3, message 7, message 8 with aim accounts or gmail account all combination work perfectly.

problem is over wlan (uk--France), test doesn't work between Aim accounts, gmail accounts or combined. (->not AiM/Gmail issue)

no solution found up to now.

maybe related to two step authentifications work (still in progress ?) made by Apple this year :

( maybe not applicable if same Wlan public ip ???)

I feel a bit hostage, or like white mouse in a lab. We need an urgent fix, to retore our communications.

    Hi,

    Just to be clear.

Most people here are other users like yourself.

There are a limited number of Hosts who monitor the discussions only for breaches of  the Terms of Use.

For about a year of so there have also been "Community Specialist" who are supposed to pick up on threads that have had not reply are they drop of the 'front page" (it's about 24 hours in the majority of Forums and this is used as a guideline on faster moving areas).

The issue is global (all countries, all ISPs)

That would seem to make it in Apple 's court. (some update)

However it is effecting all versions of iChat (at least from iChat 5.0.3 in Snow Leopard) and upwards through all version of Messages, which would seem to push the issue back to the Internet as it were.

As it effects both AIM to AIM connections and Jabber to Jabber  (there is no AIM to Jabber) it is not something either AIM or Google have done.

It does not seem to have effected everyone at once and seems to have been a sort of cascade effect.

It is hard to imagine a scenario that would explain this.

Use http://www.apple.com/feedback/ichat.html and fill in the details that should be in the lower Drop down bits in the Free Text area.

The page should really list iChat and Messages but was not properly kept up to date even when it was just iChat.

August 4 10 AM EDT:  Screen sharing using iChat won't work again, this time DHCP leases, screen resolutions, and others mentioned in my last post were all correct from the beginning.

UPDATE: finally got around to raising the matter with Apple level 2 support (Faye in Ireland) back at the end of July.  Faye found us a workaround but has not come back with any explanation for the problem, which as others have suggested, seems to be a fundamental issue somewhere in the Apple / AIM network!

Workaround: when you fire up Messages make sure the Messages dialogue box is open (cmd 0). Choose the person you want to video call / share screen with and click "Details" at the top right of this box.  A dialogue box opens with 3 icons to the right of the person's name - screen share / video call / phone.  Click the screen share icon and select whether you want to share your screen or share your Buddies screen and screen sharing with voice comms should start.  Click the camera icon and a FaceTime video session starts.  NB: you can't screen share and FaceTime at the same time!

If you open Spotlight (top right of your screen) and Spotlight search for "Screen Sharing" you should find a system app that can be parked down in the Dock (next to Messages?) which does pretty much the same thing once you enter Hostname or AppleID in the "Connect To:" box.  At least this gets screen sharing working even though FaceTime video isn't as good as Messages video i.e. multiple video calls are not supported.

Let's hope Apple sorts this out properly ASAP!

    Regards

    Hi,

    That is not a workaround.

That is using the iMessages way - this invokes the Screen Sharing App  (Like Video calls Invoke FaceTime).

Where Apple IDs may also be iMessages and AM valid Screen Names this will work if the info is on the Address Cards as such.

    To be clear.

Since Yosemite, Messages has two different methods of Screen Sharing.

The "iChat Way" for AIM and Jabber Buddies works from the Buddy List and the Buddies Menu.

The "iMessages way" used the chat window and the "Details" option.  (It also needs System Preferences > Sharing > Screen Sharing to be On where as the iChat way does not).

Looking at other bug report on the same period, I find out they end up also with errors FullCone

Port restricted or Full Cone are NAT issue, and could explain it work on LAN but not on WAN->

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_address_translation

Not an easy subject when used with different servers Jabber SIP and Viceroy data ORM.

Hopefully we will not have to wait for much longer ... Come on Apple we love and need our iChat/Messages app.

    hi,

I see you found the Wiki item on Address Translation and worked out it is the naming of the router type.

Port Restricted has been the method listed by iChat 2 through to Yosemite Messages 8 on the following devices since 2004 for me.

    Thomson-Alcatel 510v4  (Routing Modem)

Linksys WRT54G (wireless router used with above)

    Sagem Fast 2405. (Routing Modem)

    Netgear (can't remember model)

Sky Modem for ADSL (Branded box)

    Sky Fibre Modem  (Branded box)

I have only seen Apple's own Airport devices reported as Full Cone.

    The process works like this.

You send a Visible Invite to the Buddy (from a Buddy List).

This starts a call on port 5678 to the SNATMAP server (Snatmap.mac.com) that apple run to negotiate connections.

As the Buddy accepts his end does the same thing.

This is then the SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) bit that sends another invite (As per Log).

There are various Text phases to be seen with number values.

    This is part of that

    CSeq: 1 INVITE

Others appear higher in that section and have 200 OK, 180 Ringing, 120 (I think) Trying and so on.  (Basically all the steps a manual operator connection would make).

The SNATMAP server is the only part of the internet that all Video and Audio chats go though (from Buddy Lists) that effects both Jabber and AIM connections.

It would also effect Bonjour but for some reason LAN based connections are unaffected no matter what type of accounts are being used.

Just thought I would post again--I contacted Apple tech support June 28th because of Messages not connecting for video chats. It would work occasionally, but for the past month or 5 weeks I have not been able to use it at all for video chatting or screensharing. My mom and brother have the same problem. We still try it each morning to see if by some miracle it will work but no go. We use an awkward workaround of FaceTime on the Mac and iPad so the 3 of us can chat each morning. Very annoying! It used to be so reliable and easy to use.

STILL NO FIX, APPLE RELEASED 10.10.5 THIS WEEK. Asked by the level 2 who we have been working with for over 3 months on this issue to see if messages(chat) would work. Just updated two macs and.........no improvement, no video, no audio chatting, no remote login.  frustrating!

From what  I do understand of the problem, it is located on or behind the SNATMAP server, I did try to look at it with a packets analyser (WireShark) and I am able to see some ICMP packet (error) with the SNATMAP IP.

I do have those error with LAN connection as well, (conversation working), see as well the traffic with AOL ip range, and some UDP traffic.

I think the NAT issue is on Apple side, that becoming even more complicated with the Viceroy data ORM manipulating the IP (to hide correspondant ip during connection).

It's nothing we can do (don't lose your good settings), not user system dependant (update will do nothing), and we are at Apple mercy. Apple need to fix their servers side for us to recover this function.

Time is flying, first disturbance was noticed in June (on and off),  but service went down early July 2015 and didn't return to normal.

(I did purchase a Mac Mini for this purpose less than a year ago, and really want Apple to fix it asap)

    Hi,

    Thanks for that.

That is an App I don't have and it not something I would normally do.  (If I can't fix something with a basic set up, I will not ask Posters to try something I would not do myself.  I believe that most people have a limit on what they will try.)

I have copied your Post into the Thread I have in the Lounge (where I can Post more directly to the Hosts - they say they past my original info On  but that itself also took two weeks).

    Hopefully it will help.

I know this page is out of date but it is the Messages Feedback page http://www.apple.com/feedback/ichat.html

You have to use the Free Text Area to post all the info needed in the bottom Drop down boxes as they have not been update since Snow Leopard.

Can you post the results of your findings in the info you post.
