Q: Problem importing a single song

I am trying to import an entire CD into iTunes - no problem. One song seems to be damaged due to a minor scratch on the CD. During play back of the CD and now the imported version on iTunes the track is badly garbled. Here's the question, since I purchase this CD and downloaded it into iTunes, can I get the ungarbled version from the iTunes store at no charge? I seem to recall that one of the claims of iTunes match was that my music library would be "matched" to the iTunes library and the iTunes version of the song would be used.

    Hi,

No, you cannot get an ungarbled version from the iTunes store at no charge.

If the track is damaged, iTunes match will not match the track. Match uses the sound footprint to determine whether the track can be matched or not and if there is a fault it will not match.

Turns out that's not entirely true. Based on your comment I figured that I was doomed to delete the song and buy it for a third time (LP, CD, and now iTunes). So, I deleted the song having highlighted it and right clicked, selected the Delete Song (not Remove Download). I waited a minute for the transaction to clear my devices -- probably didn't matter. Then opened the album in iTunes and selected Show Complete Album. The song that I deleted was shown with the  option of "Add" instead of "Buy". I selected Add. The song downloaded in all it's high fidelity - YEAH! Problem solved!

    Hi,

If you are using Apple music, the track that you have added is not a matched track but one from Apple music. This will have DRM and will be removed if you cancel your Apple music subscription.

    Hi Jim,

This seems inconsistent with my experience. Remember the downloaded song was garbled from the CD and had been that way for some time. Apple Music had been running for weeks without downloading a clean version. When I deleted the song, Apple Music "added" the ungarbled song.

The article mentions "users who have iTunes Match and Apple Music." I thought that iTunes Match was replaced by Apple Music if you chose to buy Apple Music. I didn't think that they worked together.

    Thanks for you thoughts,

    HI,

Apple music does not replace iTunes Match. iCloud Music Library: Understanding differences between Apple Music and iTunes Match - Apple Support

ITunes match continues with an annual subscription and is independent but complementary to Apple music.

The track you got from Apple music has DRM and is not yours to keep if you unsubscribe to Apple music. The rest of that album will have been matched and will still be yours after subscription to Apple music ceases.

To verify this, go to song view and add iCloud status column  - what does this say?

    Hi Jim,

Excellent clarification, thank you. In song view rather than showing "Matched" in iCloud Status, it shows "Apple Music". Well that answers that question.

    Thanks again,
