Q: Messages database is being upgraded, no progress, attempting for 3 days...

Upgraded from 10.9.x to Yosemite 10.10 Friday, launched Messages, this dialog has been on the screen ever since.

Messages Dialog.PNG

If I quit messages and restart it, the same dialog, with the same 0% progress comes back and I can't use messages.

I have upgraded 2 other macs with the same set of accounts and this hasn't happened.

Console.log has the following two lines immediately after I launch messages:

10/20/14 10:36:04.260 AM com.apple.xpc.launchd[1]: (com.apple.imfoundation.IMRemoteURLConnectionAgent) The _DirtyJetsamMemoryLimit key is not available on this platform.

10/20/14 10:36:04.298 AM Messages[21245]: schema version 0

Anyone else seeing this?  Any suggestions?

This is the solution that worked for my other machines.

    1. Quit all active Application running

    2. Go to the Finder, in the Menu bar select the "Go" menu and choose the option "Go To Folder..."

    3. Enter this path without the quotes "~/Library/Containers/"

    4. Find a Folder called "com.apple.iChat"

    5. Rename that folder to "com.apple.iChat.Archive"

    6. Reboot your machine.

This should take care of it.

Thanks so much. Renaming the folder "com.apple.iChat" to "com.apple.iChat.Archive" worked for me. After restart, Messages now started and gave me access to all of message history.  I don't know what caused the problem in the first place, since Messages had been working just fine for several weeks since I got a new MacBook Pro.  However, I did change the name of my identity on the laptop recently, so maybe that had something to do with it.

Your comment about changing identities is probably the key. I did the same and the fix above helped correct the database issue. Thanks for commenting!

    hi,

It should be several folders deeper.

In ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.iChat/Data/Library/Messages is the actual Archive folder for Saved chats.

In some cases this shows as not being a Folder.

Change the name to something other than Archive.
Create a new Folder called Archive.

    Restart the Messages app.

If you have a Time Machine Back Up  enter the new folder and Restore the Contents of Saved chats from an older version.

Changing the name worked to get Messages working again. I had to install a new hard drive. My old one has too many errors to restore in full.  So, I am cherry picking the data and hoping it will copy without errors.  If I want to restore my text message history from my old drive, do I just copy the Data folder over to the new Library/Container/com.apple.iChat folder or is it more complicated?

    Hi,

You need ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.iChat/Data/Library/Messages/Archive for the Saved Chats you have made.

You also need the Contents of ~/Library/Messages and the three Chat.db items (the names vary but they are all data bases)

There is also the Attachments folder in here which you will need.

The Attachments Folder then needs an Alias created and put in the other folder with the Archive.

Whilst Saved chants are in one place the Chat.db items provide the method of pointing at them and keeping a summary of the iMessages and Saved Chats.

Of course you also have to make sure the Mac User Account on the new Mac "Owns" the files after they have been moved and that they have the right Read and Write permissions.
