Q: number of photos between iphoto and photos are different after migration

After Yosemite upgrade the Iphoto library was automatically upgraded to Photos. When opening up both applications I see 58.000 pictures in Photos and 63,000 pictures in Iphoto so I am missing 5,000 pictures and I don't know which and why are missing.

Do you have RAW &JPEG pairs in your iPhoto Library?  iPhoto is counting them as two photos, but Photos is showing the stacked as one photo.

Have you checked the Hidden album in Photos, if Photos are hidden?

Thnx Leoni - I did check Iphoto Library Photo's on overall search with RAW which returned abt 1,000 pict. So would still be missing abt 4,000. I made a SMART album with filename contains RAW which returned only 112 pict. Hidden pictures in Photo Library are none. I was wondering does Photo work different with Thumbnails? If Thumbnail is different then original picture this would match-up the difference of abt 5,000.

Have you tried a smart album with "Photo is RAW"?  The RAW photos may not necessarily have the file extension "RAW" but a file extension, that is specific for the RAW format of the camera.

I indeed made the smart album as you made a screenshot from. I personally however never use RAW as a format, I use JPEG. I use point and shoot camera which don't even have RAW as format option. So any RAW format pictures would be ones I imported from someone else and that many I don't have to justify the difference between Photos and Iphoto.
