Q: Work out app on my apple watch keeps pausing

my work out app keeps pausing on my apple watch when the screen shuts off after about 45 seconds. I'd like to find out how to fix. I can't use this watch for work outs at all if it keeps doing this. Only time I got longer then that I had to hold up my arm and touch the screen every 20 seconds to keep it from going off. That kind of makes a work out hard to do and shouldn't have to do this to keep it going.

glad I found this. Having the same problem. You need to get your watch replaced. It's a hardware issue. Nice to know I'm not the only one it happened to. My new watch is coming in tomorrow.

Had the same issue with my apple watch - seconds into a workout it just pauses for no reason - Walked 3 miles the other day to look at the watch and see it was paused after just 30 seconds and recorded none of my data. The only way i've found to stop it is to set the work out time to just 5 minutes and hit start - on 5 minute mode it doesnt pause and will continue recording for my full work out. Its not ideal but makes you look good when you've worked out for an hour and smashed your target. Hope Apple can sort this out - as its working on a 5 minute workout but nothing else for me, but hey at least its recording data now. Hope this helps everyone

set it to a 5 minute timed work out - it worked for me - any other setting and the bloody thing just pauses all the time or at least till you've reached the half way goal.

This is very annoying. I suspect it can happen with a loose band. I wear my metal band loose & rarely switch out to the nylon rubber band. I wish apple would have a setting to turn auto pause to off.

    Hi

The behaviour that you describe may be caused by your watch losing contact with your skin, causing it to believe that it has been removed from your wrist. This would cause the Workout app to pause automatically.

A loose fitting band can trigger this by allowing your watch to lift from your wrist and/or by allowing clothing (for example, the end of a sleeve) to slip beneath the back of the watch.

During exercise, Apple Watch should be worn snugly on the top of your wrist. Apple suggests that you consider tightening your band before workouts and loosening it again afterwards. Better contact with your wrist may also improve heart rate sensor performance during your workout.

Workouts may also be paused or ended early due to accidental interactions with your watch's screen (including by clothing). To help prevent this, you can lock the screen:

    - At any time after starting a workout, press firmly on the display and tap on Lock.

    - When you are ready to end the workout, press firmly again and first tap on Unlock.

Many recommend using the workout app in "Other" mode. Today I tried that and it worked perfect on the treadmill . When I usedon the stationary bike, the problem was reintroduced , was to "pause". Then I remembered that I had advised to block thescreen with "force touch ", once done that began to run perfectly. In short, I can´t define well what is the source of the problem but at least i'm finding ways to make it work properly.

Before this , I calibrate the clock for 20 minutes walking outdoors as Apple recommends.

Anyway we should clarify that the app should work correctly in all modes and not only in " other " ...

I have tattoos on my arm and a portion of one ( a thick black line ) goes through my wrist just below where the sensor is. I remember when Apple launch the Watch his support page confirm that tattoos are causing trouble reading the heart rate, so this may be the reason for the failure ... Apple recommends disabling the " detection wrist " for cases like this, I'll try...
