Please.   You will not get a technical reply with such an odd presentation.

Set out details of the machine you have, it's OS and RAM.   (Put these details in your profile for future reference).  Then explain the circumstances of how the problem arose and what, if anything, you have done to resolve it.  Then place your question in the appropriate Forum.

You haven't fully replied as I suggested and ideally the whole reply should have formed the basis for a new question.

I will ask the hosts to transfer this thread to another more appropriate Forum.  iMac intel.

I replaced the hard drive last week, and since the the fan tends to on a high mode. as i write this reply alls quiet at the moment then after a wee while it will start up again.  The system is all cool no signs of over heating.

That's better.   I have now asked for it to be transferred.   It is in your interests that this should happen.   I hope your problem gets resolved.

With respect to you Seventy one my expertise lies elsewhere, thanks for your response.   However you obviously don't have any knowledge in this type of issue. I am sure its not the first time this type of issue has surfaced.

Correct.  I have no particular knowledge about Fan speeds, but this document may be of help.

                    Neither do I have Yosemite.

My help here was to try to clarify what the circumstances were and guide the question to an area more suited than you originally put.  Imacs incidentally have no relationship with PPC once you have newer than 2010 or are using 10.7 Lion or above.    Your reply says 12.2 which is 2012 model./p>

I don't know if your model is effected but many iMacs have a temperature sensor fitted to the HD. When you replace it you basically have the choice to track down a disk with compatible sensor or you can use SMCFanControl to reduce fan noise during a normal boot. It will however ramp up to full when booting & when using other OS's like the recovery OS.

Work out what model you have & look around …

There are comments if you look in the hard drive sections.

Or take it to Apple & ask them to fit a compatible HD or to test it. If it ramps up and down it may not be the HD temperature sensor issue.
