Q: Issues with two-step verfication on iPhone 3GS

Dear Sir/Madam,

 

I recently picked up a problem with my two-step verification on my iPhone 3GS. It used to work just fine for many months. My problem is that I can NOT complete the two-step verification process anymore - I can only complete the first step in the process. On my iphone when I go to "Settings" then "iCloud" then "Account" and then I enter my Apple password. This works fine. The second-step does not work anymore. The "Verify Identity" screen then pops up correctly as before and asks me to choose the method to verify my identity. I can verify with 4 different ways e.g. iphone, ipad, SMS etc. It does not matter which one I choose I can not progress past the "Verify Identity" screen. Absolutely nothing happens when I click on the "Next" button in the top right hand corner. It is as if the "Next" button does not work anymore. I am therefore stuck on the "Verify Identity" screen. What should happen as it did many times before is that a screen pops up where I can enter the Apple 4 digit code for verification. What now? I can not read my icloud mail on my iphone anymore because of this problem.

 

I even tried generating an "app specific password" at https://appleid.apple.com to solve this problem but it does not work when I enter the 25 string password where I would enter my apple password. I did not expect it to work but I tried anyway.

 

Furthermore, I tested my apple devices and they can all receive the apple verification codes. I checked this by logging into www.icloud.com from a desktop computer and sending the apple 4-digit verification codes to both my iphone 3GS and ipad 4 as part of the login process.

    I'm not sure if it is a bug or what, but when I ran into this issue with my iPad 1, I backed it up to iCloud, then went to Settings>Reset>Erase All Content & Settings, and then restored it from the backup in order to get signed back into iCloud.

     

    I still have 2-step verification turned on, but haven't really needed to use it since I got signed back into iCloud. I most often had to send a verification code when I was signing into this forum, but clicked on the "Remember this Computer", so unless I go into Manage My Apple ID, I don't really need to use it.

    Regenwald, I also have iOS 6.1.6 installed on my iPhone 3GS. I think I know what your problem is after studying the steps you took. Here is what I did. Please try the following and report back.

     

     

    Steps:

    1. Switch off 2-step verification at http://applied.apple.com and select your 3 security questions etc.

    2. THIS STEP IS IMPORTANT: You did this step at the end. It should be done here. With 2-step now off, go to your iPhone under "settings" then "iCloud " then "Account" and enter your apple password and save it. Nothing else should happen now because 2-step is off.

    3. Now go back to  http://applied.apple.com and switch on 2-step verification again and follow the process of enabling your devices. Everything should work fine now. There will be no need to login again with a verification 4 digit code as before to get to the apple iCloud services.

    Alright, I had followed the procedure of completely turning off then turning on 2-Step-Verification for my Apple ID, which was described here. This has fixed the issue for about a week for me. However, few days ago suddenly the issue was back where I was suddenly perpetually asked to enter my Apple ID's password. After turning my phone off and on, I re-entered my password into the iCloud settings on the iPhone, the 2-step-verification screen slid up and here is the surprise: now the "Next" button worked again! Could it really be that Apple fixed this issue?! I am impressed! Hopefully it stays like that! Can anyone confirm, cannot be I am the only one…

    yes, it now worked for me, I wasn't in a hurry, and since initially posting here, when I tried again,  I found that I didn't need to turn it all off and setup the 3GS and then on again....

     

    seconded as now resolved...
