How much is it going down? Double tap the home button and swipe all apps upwards. There may be an app running in the background. -AJ

Depends on how you have things set up. If you have Automatic Downloads, Background Refresh, Location Services turned on, they are going to start doing what they are supposed to do.

Review your Settings, and turn off any interactive settings that you do not need if you are concerned about your battery usage. Or put the device into Airplane mode until you are ready to activate those services.

Sorry - closing apps does not do anything in terms of saving battery. There is no need to actively "close" an app unless you are having issues with that app.

one of my map apps will continue to drain my battery and use location even if it is just running in the background. That is all I wanted to make sure wasn't occurring. Thanks for clarifying though.-AJ

It will continue to use Location services whether it is open or not if you have it set up in Setting to use "Always". The app behaves no differently whether it is visible when you double-click the Home button or not. It is the Settings that control the behavior of the app. This article may clarify it:
