    use a normal usb keyboard to select options for the windows install after holding the option key. after the hard drive has been chosen and formatted etc the keyboard works on the MacBook.

    The issue was actually that you must use a USB 2 flash drive. If you use a USB 3 drive the whole bus runs in that mode and the keyboard and flash drive stop working after the EFI boot, even with Windows 10. This seems to be a Windows installer issue. What a nightmare!
