Q: Airplay won't change to mirror iMac from Extend Desktop

When I turn on Airplay I only get audio.  Black screen.  Airplay drop down menu shows extend desktop and won't change to mirror iMac.  I have restarted, verified/repaired permissions, checked for updates and reconnected everything.  Help! How can I get AirPlay to change back to mirror iMac?

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

After calling Apple Technical Service, they suggested me to reinstall OSX. I did it and the Airplay problem was solved. This was a little bit drastic solution but I was tired of trying every solution suggested in this thread without success. This reminded me of the old Windows days where to solve any minor problem with your computer the fast solution was to format C: and reinstall everything. Sincerely I thought that with Apple these kind of things were not going to happen.... :-((

I had the same problem on an iMac mid-2011 and struggled a lot before finding the solution: Duet.

I installed this nice application short before starting experiencing the problem, I removed it by means of the built-in uninstaller and Airplay started working fine again. Strange is that Duet works fine on my Macbook Pro Retina 2013 and doesn't conflict with Airplay there.

Just bought an Apple TV today. Still having this issue. Tried everything in this thread - going so far as to even download those applications and run the uninstallers just incase but still no luck.

When you reinstalled OS X. Did you do a clean install in which you wiped it first and then had to manually reinstall all applications? Or did you just do an install in place in which you didn't have to restore anything (manually or through time machine)?

If anyone else has any ideas but I've made sure that anything related to AirParrot, Air Display, or iDisplay is gone off this Late 2013 iMac.

    Thanks.

Nevermind! After just half splitting the extensions that were added before I got this iMac (basically from 2007-2014) and bringing them back in 50% at a time I found that my screen recycler extension was causing the issue.

If you've tried the aforementioned fixed and didn't have any luck, go to /System/Library/Extensions/ and delete ScreenRecyclerDriver.kext

I had difficulty locating these two extensions so I contacted Apple support and started a chat. The session lasted all of 5 minutes and great news Mirror IMac is working!

Same here. I uninstalled the app "Duet". And now Airplay works just fine. The people who make this app should fix this though.

    This:

    Applications>Utilites>Uninstall Air Display

Had this app on my iMac. Removed it and mirroring works as expected.

    Thanks for the heads up!

I have gone through this frustration also until I called Apple (chat session). Searched everywhere for those two extensions mentioned. My mistake was looking in the wrong Library.  Have you clicked on the Macintosh HD  icon on your desktop? If not there is where you will find the correct library folder.

step 1. When you uninstall AirParrot did you just delete the app or use the "uninstall" app? Just trashing the app will not be sufficient.

Step 2. APexFramebuffer located at:  System/Library/Extensions

AirParrotDriver located at: System/Library/Extensions  AND Library/Extensions

Once you have deleted the files you must empty your trash and then restart your computer.

This solved the same problem for me as well! I have a new  27" Retina iMac running OS-X 10.10.4 beta. I thought running the beta OS was causing the problem, but it wasn't. Obviously do AirParrot and Airplay not co-exist happily.

iTunes on my imac can communicate with it.. but i can NOT mirror or do extended display... all i get is that beautiful BLACK SCREEN!!

    Did anyone anything?

Thanks. Removing the ScreenRecylcler extension solved the problem for me. I moved it to the trash and emptied it (I am not sure if emptying is necessary, but I did it).

Everyone needs to be careful with installing programs that allow the iPad to be a second screen for the Mac. I installed about 3 different programs, trying to find one I liked.

I has the same problems with a brand new iMac from 2013 who I have for around two weeks now. But I transferred all files with the migration assistant and with this some old extensions.

For me it was iDisplay from shape, who destroy the AirPlay Mirroring and not AirParrot. Sadly they deliver not a good manual to remove all files around iDisplay, only give the tip to download the installer and uninstall iDisplay. But don't work for me. There is also a script, placed inside the installer. Didn't work to for me.

Well... I found a tip on a external (german) page, how you can successfully let run the uninstaller script (http://hansruedi-vetsch.blogspot.de/2012/08/uninstall-idisplay-with-mac-mountain .html)

    1. Right click on "Uninstall" in the iDisplay Desktop 2.1.39 for Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and 10.7 Lion (dmg, 1.44Mb).
    2. Click on "Show Package Contents"
    3. Enter Contents
    4. Enter Resources
    5. Enter Scripts
    6. Double click main.scpt (this should open the AppleScript-Editor)
    7. Press the Run button (it's the 3rd in the toolbar)
    8. Press OK
    9. Wait till you see the dialog saying succeeded
    10. Close AppleScript-Editor
    11. Restart the Mac

This works for me and solve my problem after the restart.

If for some reasons shape not longer deliver any installer / uninstaller, you can do it via terminal or follow the path's.

    sudo rm -R /System/Library/Extensions/MSM*

    sudo rm -R /Applications/iDisplay.app

    sudo rm \"/Users/$USER/Library/Preferences/com.shapeservices.idisplay-host-full.plist\

    sudo rm \"/Library/LaunchDaemons/ag.shape.MSMToolHelper.plist\

    sudo rm \"/Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/ag.shape.MSMToolHelper\
