Q: Does anyone else HATE the new Photos "upgrade"?

Photos has made a huge MESS of my pictures & I literally want to scream.  It changed the dates on a lot of my pictures and now I can't even find the new ones after I upload them.  I don't have time to sit at my computer and work out Apples bugs.  ARRGHHHH!!!!!   Anyone have a good non-Apple program that they have switched to?  I am SO ready...

MacBook Pro (15-inch 2.53 GHz), iOS 8.3

    W R O N G ! ! ! ???????

I have backup of my data since long years, and not with time machine, must before that!

what i don't have is a professional backup plan, with monthly or yearly copies. the mistake i did with Photos was just that I gave up from iPhoto library to Photos and when I wake-up a couple of weeks later, was already too late.

so once again my advice is still the same, do backup keep your backup until you are sure you want to migrate to the new upgrade

Please keep on topic. I was being polite before. If you don't care about your data then don't have a backup plan. We don't  care. That will be your problem. Your other logic is also flawed, at least what I could read in between the senseless lines of rantings and ramblings you posted before.

    Good Luck

sums up, it is what everybody expects from an update/upgrade, not substract

also don't bother to answer that we have choices, and if we don't like don't use. that it is obvious and hollow answers.

at least my post provides some warning to the ones are stepping in the Photos App, and can help them to know what kind of behaviour they can expect from the App.

The point you're missing is that it is neither an update or upgrade to iPhoto. It really has nothing at all to do with iPhoto. It's an entirely new application, with new aims and purposes.

That's why iPhoto still runs and it did before Photos was installed, and runs exactly like it did before. No different. Your iPhoto installation is entirely untouched by the new app. SO, not an update to iPhoto. Not an upgrade to iPhoto. A whole new application.

Photos uses a different organisation paradigm, has an entirely new feature set including the whole iCloud Library concept and improved editing tools. It does not have the same told as iPhoto nor does it seek to. If it did, there would be no point in migrating to the new app.

So, it's simple: what are your needs in a photo manager. Then choose the app that works for you. NO app works for everybody.

Me too. I can't imagine how anyone would consider this an improvement over iPhoto. I know that Apple wants all its devices to coordinate, but this software is pitiful compared to iPhoto. I've really explored it, read two books on it, etc. I understand there will be a new version soon, but still: Apple! The quality of your products is going downhill fast.

You (and others) are not understanding what makes good BUSINESS Sense for Apple - whose obligation is to their SHAREHOLDERS not their customers.

You are complaining about a FREE App. If Apple were to make it too much like its Pro App, Aperture, folks would not BUY Aperture - they would be failing in their fiduciary duty to their shareholder's, the duty to MAKE MONEY, Save Money & NOT Lose Money or Leave It On the Table.

There are tricks & tips in the User Tips list accessed at the top of the forum or from my link a few posts back.

A lot of us here have been MacHeads for several decades... progress happens - and sometimes it is not what we wanted or expected, but we adapted - now we don't remember what it is is we were griping about - I can assure this is true about this forum's SiteWare which changed pretty radically last summer

Change you WorkFlow! Buy Aperture or PhotoShop!

This mosh pit will not bring about change - because it is wrong in principlal.

Aperture was discontinued, although certain versions (obtained some time ago) will still run under Mavericks and Yosemite.

I understand photos is a 1.0 release, but there are a lot of problems.

Rather than complaining I really see a need for an active forum that identifies the problems and organizes some constructive feedback to Apple.

    What I like about photos:

    - Moments is a great way to quickly see things in context

    - Albums can be used just like events, for organzing.

    - The "pluggin" style of effects will be great once there's more to add into the system.

What is killing me with the program:

    - It seems to have lost keywords, faces, location data from my aperture library.

    - Adding a face to an image takes a long time.  I used to be able to blast through adding keywords, deleting a photo, adding a face, all of these pause the entire program for six seconds or more.  If I have a 400 image shoot to blast through it is awful.

Please share more specific details and let's help each other get the most out of this and request reasonable changes.

Overall, a very constructive message from someone who appears to be a Professional ( "... If I have a 400 image shoot to blast through ... ")

Your suggestion regarding a "Forum" (did you mean a "thread"?) "identifying problems" would likely be difficult to manage, even if didn't push the limits of the ToU regarding Apple's liberal interpretation of "polling" (posting a POLL) - this place is already designed to  handle each problem as individual issues.

AS for your next idea in that same sentence, Apple has actually 'improved' their Product Feedback process a little bit - see the User Tip Official Apple Feedback link for Photos - in the form there is a pull down menu that has a choice for "Product Enhancements" in addition to 'assorted problems"

You may have caught my comment about the unheralded changes made to this forum's UX design last summer. To help cope with the grouching, our friend Yellowbox took a more positive approach... starting a thread to consolidate Tips & Tricks for using the new SiteWare  > Using the new-look forums, asking for positive comments, which after 169 replies was turned into a User Tip > Getting the best out of the 'New-Look' forums - very popular reading.

Rant-based threads will likely NOT get much participation from the folks that can really help with problems and strategies like User Tip authors such as léonie and Old Toad - but well-crafted, creatively titled ones would likely draw them like moths to a flame!

It is NOT the case that squeaky wheels get the oil here - ask nice and help is usually on the way.

Keep up the good vibrations, J Sal - and in the meantime, try to figger out what to do for 6 seconds at a time

    buenos tardes

I can't imagine how anyone would consider this an improvement over iPhoto.

How about all the people who wanted the ability to seamlessly manage and process their images right across their devices - Macs, Phones and iPads? They're the ones who use post in the iPhoto forum looking for just that set of features. I'm not really sure how you can possibly justify a word like 'pitiful' to describe that, or to describe all the extra editing facilities that the app has over iPhoto. Although it uses a different organising paradigm (Moments instead of Events), it also has very many of the same organising tools - keywords, Albums, Smart Albums and so on - as iPhoto, so again, not sure where you get 'pitiful' from.

As I've said earlier in this thread, this app has nothing for me. I've moved on to another app that is a better fit for my requirements. But that doesn't make this a bad app. It's really quite good doing what it is designed to do...

If there are features that you want added in, use the Feedback mechanism. Or, simply, continue to use iPhoto or some other app that best fits your need.

Is it possible to cull in the smart album, or must you return to another view to delete unwanted photos?

The point of these forums, I believe, is to share info and experience.  No one of us as access to the entire user base, crash reports and such that Apple's engineers are seeing.  So asking someone how many people agree doesn't help much.  However if we take the time to describe our specific problems the whole community benefits.

I want to use Photos, but the problems I'm running into are really difficult to work around.

    - Extreme lag in basic tasks (delete, rotate, add keyword).  I'm on a newer system.  Photos striped away a lot of the features from Aperture (which I understand), but it runs like a bloated program, rather than something lean.

You might want to troubleshoot that as it runs very smoothly and no performance issues here. Create a new user account and make a trial library there. How does that perform?
