Aug 9, 2015 3:00 PM in response to Allanblby UGADog,You should try rebuilding the iPhoto library as explained here. iPhoto 6 and later: Rebuilding the iPhoto library - Apple Support

Aug 9, 2015 3:56 PM in response to Allanblby Old Toad,Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete the contents the following folder: User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
If the above fails try this:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 - select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.
4 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library âž™ Rebuild Library menu option
5 - in the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed. Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2: Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

Aug 9, 2015 3:56 PM in response to Allanblby Terence Devlin,Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
Regards
TD

Aug 13, 2015 9:56 AM in response to Terence Devlinby Allanbl,Thanks for the comprehensive reply, however, having worked through all of the posted suggestions I find the rebuilt library has exactly the same issue. Does this suggest there is a corrupt picture somewhere in the library, and if so, how do I identify which one (bearing in mind I can't click any commands when iPhoto is opened)?
Any other suggestions beyond that?
Thank you

Aug 13, 2015 11:05 AM in response to Allanblby Terence Devlin,If it's the same issue then rebuilding with iPhoto Library Manager didn't work. Are you sure you did it correctly? Remember at the end of that process you will have two iPhoto Libraries. Do you?

Aug 13, 2015 12:41 PM in response to Allanblby Terence Devlin,This is the one I am opening and getting the same issue
How are you opening it?
What version of iPhoto do you have?

Aug 13, 2015 2:29 PM in response to Terence Devlinby Allanbl,iphoto '09 (I think) - version 8-1-2
I am opening it by "Finder - go - home - pictures - then the above @12 Aug 2015 rebuild (rebuilt)".
Is it worth trying the rebuild again?

Aug 13, 2015 3:06 PM in response to Allanblby Terence Devlin,Try this way:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'

Aug 13, 2015 3:12 PM in response to Terence Devlinby Allanbl,Same result. It opens the library, but as soon as I click anywhere (a photo, a menu option, or even try to select the scroll bar) I get the spinning beach ball and it just stays like that. The only way to close it is to use force quit (where it tells me iPhoto is not responding).

Aug 18, 2015 3:15 PM in response to Terence Devlinby Allanbl,I access it using >Go in Finder and choosing home.
This appears to be my user file, which I assume means it is on the hard drive (same location as the original iPhoto app)
