Aug 6, 2015 10:10 PM in response to hueyoby Harmon Dow,My wife started having this problem a few weeks ago. I don't know if I have solved her problem, but a few tests suggest that maybe I have. She is running a fully updated Mavericks on a first generation low end Air.
The New Event problem seems to have started when she created a new calendar, which she established in her iCal preferences (or iCal established for her) as her default calendar. So I changed this problem default calendar back to the default calendar she used to have before the problem calendar was created.
Note that this is not merely the prior default calendar, but also the actual original default calendar as set up in the original Mavericks on her computer. I believe that Mavericks is the original OS on the computer, but it might have been Mountain Lion - in which case, the default calendar I changed her to goes back two operating systems. I mention this because the solution to the problem might reside in insuring that the default calendar is the original default calendar per the OS.
Also note that the problem default calendar was one which is not shared with anyone, whereas her old, and now new, default calendar is shared. I mention this because perhaps the non-shared nature of the problem default calendar is somehow implicated.
We'll see if this continues to solve her problem - I'll try to remember to report back either way in a few days.

Aug 7, 2015 1:02 AM in response to cslby Toni Martin,I've made a clean install of Yosemite lately since I got a new computer. Yesterday I remember it still changing the time to default time for an event but today it seems to work?? So seems as if the problem is gone for me on my new Yosemite.
But of course still have same issue in Mavericks.

Aug 10, 2015 3:45 PM in response to cslby angelams,I'm still having this problem (on 10.9.5) and my iCal is *not* synced to any other device, though I am using iCloud (long, convoluted story as to why).
Should I export my calendar, delete my iCal account from iCloud, and import it to see if that fixes the problem? I haven't wanted to try it 'cause I rely heavily on my calendar and I'm afraid things might get screwed up worse. Meaning, I'm not Cloud savvy....Perhaps Fantastical is an option. -
Aug 10, 2015 4:08 PM in response to Harmon Dowby angelams,Hi, Just wanted to say that I've been using the same default calendar since day 1, and events weren't reverting until around the time this thread was started. So, in my case, at least, that's not the problem. :-/
This is so frustrating! I can't think of anything that's changed for me that could have triggered this. In other words, I really think the problem is on Apple's end, and not caused by anything we're doing differently. Though I sure hope the problem has been resolved for you!

Aug 10, 2015 6:21 PM in response to angelamsby Toni Martin,This also started on my end without me changing anything... so seems like the same ting. It's definitely a problem on Apple's side. Just weird they are not answering our support requests. It's probably a huge iCloud bug they don't want to admit to...

Aug 12, 2015 6:30 AM in response to hueyoby rogermellie7,Same thing here and completely agree and support "acmac" comment regarding Apple Tech... The multitude of small problems that now appear are forcing people further and further away from MAC! What was once a seamless system now seems over complicated and doesn't work properly! Not the vision of an end to end system that was once spoken of!

Aug 12, 2015 6:54 AM in response to Harmon Dowby Harmon Dow,See above where I thought I might have a solution to at least some iterations of this problem.
After an initial period where this seemed to have worked, my wife's iCal is up to its old tricks. Still getting the New Event Bug.

Aug 12, 2015 7:01 AM in response to angelamsby Harmon Dow,Everything seems to point to this being a Cloud issue, which I suppose no individual user would be able to correct...

Aug 21, 2015 7:47 AM in response to Harmon Dowby jacquelinedanson,I have also (suddenly in the last few days) started having this infuriating problem re 'new event' (on 10.8.5), possibly after an Apple 'security' update, unless that's a co-incidence of timing?
Thanks to all for the workaround about saving in the default calendar and, once done, changing to a customised one. However, my default calendar is shared and I'd rather not draw attention to the fact that some things (such as medical appointments) get saved in a 'private', non-shared, calendar …
Hope this issue gets fixed soon, it's really not an impressive bug in the functionality of such an important feature!

Aug 24, 2015 3:58 AM in response to hueyoby badbobs,Same problem as everyone else since the start of this thread. If I typed in the appointment maybe two or three times, it would work but ridiculous to have to do that! Then I tried using the other option for defining 'Home' or 'Work.' Have always been using the red option for 'Home' as I no longer work but when I select Green for 'Work' appointments bingo! The appointment stays and never reverts to "New Event.' Curious but there you are! I can live with green entries but come on Apple - long enough now!

Aug 24, 2015 8:58 AM in response to hueyoby Electrumpet,Nothing useful to ad, just that I have the same issue. I have been to Yosemite but hurried back to Mavericks after a fatal crash but it seems to be a cloud syncing issue anyway. Why is there no response from the apple guys themselves (or did I miss something?)
-
Aug 24, 2015 2:25 PM in response to Electrumpetby Toni Martin,I guess they are afraid to admit that their iCloud is not working as it should... quite an epic fail.

Aug 25, 2015 9:49 AM in response to hueyoby ShaneK,Is it that we have to get to thousands of users to get a Apple to correct the issue or make some backwards compatibility? I saw we are supposed to upgrade to Yosemite? I might consider if they didn't make it so hideous looking (I personally like my operating system to have some 3-d to it and not the ugly flat look) and I hate using 3rd party apps for this type of stuff as history has shown me they make system more unstable (suggestions are welcome here if someone has better experience).
Apple - I have been a fan since 1987. I own many Apple products. You have begun to leave me though. I want a user experience that I had in earlier versions of OS X and even in OS 9... A good solid system that does the things we expect of it - like making a simple calendar entry that worked so many times before but now is broken. I should not have to enter an event 2-3 times in order for it to "stick" in my calendar. You need to be reading your forums and resolve tech support issues like these before you have a mass exodus. I do not want to have to use Google Calendar or other 3rd party calendar apps that cost me more but you may leave me no choice.
If things like this continue I do not know what I will do... IF you want to make bad code or bad design decisions then you should go work at Microsoft. The Mac should be elegant and function as it has so many times in the past!
