Q: iCloud and Windows 10 compatibility issue

I just spent a few hours troubleshooting a 48 hour old install of Windows 10 onto an HP Probook 6470b. Long story short, even though everything had been fine, today upon boot I noticed iCloud Photos reported a pop-up stating it did not have permissions to access. After that, the Windows desktop and system tray kept refreshing every 2-3 seconds, and I had no control over the Start Menu button on Windows (nothing would happen even if the flashing stopped); and once the flashing did stop (though no idea why it stopped) I also could not launch the IE replacement "Edge," as it errored with an inability to register.

 

Running Windows sfc did not help.

 

From Task Manager, turning off iCloud caused the flashing to cease.

 

I also found if I turned off Wi-Fi and rebooted, the system would boot without the desktop refreshing, but as soon as I enabled Wi-Fi it began to flash again.

 

A repair of iCloud was of no use.

 

REMOVAL of iCloud cleared the issue; I am on the laptop now, with no noticeable problems.

 

iCloud was version 4.1.1.53. I cannot determine what the current version is, so I am not going to bother with it, but it appears, at least in my case, that iCloud's version is not compatible with Windows 10.

    Had the same issue due to a broken path for iCloud photos. This is what I did and it worked.

     

    1. Go to task manager and end all Icloud processes

    2. Then run a new task and restart icloud, the program should pop up even though you can't access the start button

    3. Uncheck the photo option so that iCloud stops syncing photos with your PC

    4. Restart and everything should be back to normal

     

    guess we just have to wait for the next version which is compatible

    I had the same problem and those are good instructions to stop the hiccuping of the computer.  Those steps are what I did.

    But instead of waiting for the next version to use your photos you can work around the incompatibility and solve the problem and get iCloud working now.

    I had the problem with the photos and calendar problem.  Fixed them both.  Look at the my two posts here:

    And  since that post I managed to fix the second computer too.  I've got two systems on Windows !0 and full functionality of iCloud.

    While I think I posted that even after removing iCloud and testing, I was having permission issues with the Pictures folder, I found some other info that seems to have narrowed it down. Disable Microsoft's OneDrive! That is where the conflict is happening, and even after a reboot the permissions revert back and keep you from successfully saving to Pictures (and from what I read Music, Documents as well) without an Admin approval, or again manually changing permissions or turning off sharing (which turns back on after reboot anyway). A patch is likely to come to address that.

     

    When I had reloaded iCloud I really was not having issues beyond what appears to be the OneDrive problem; I had moved the iCloud Photos folders up one level.

     

    iCloud for Windows is currently uninstalled, and I may leave it that way until a Win10 version is posted by Apple.

    Wow, so frustrating, I too just spent 10 hours figuring out that Windows10 is incompatible with the iCloud for windows download version 4.1.1.53.

    I hope Apple places a fix or Window places a fix soon - because my data and online world is now split in two. So guess I won't be using Apple or Windows products to their potential until these two companies learn to play nice together in the sandbox!  One of them should send out a press release on this - ASAP!

    I had the same problem and I uninstalled icloud and everything is working great for the last 2 day. I'm not going to go through a lot of work to get icloud to work. It took me 3 days to figure out what the problem was. There is a compatibility  problem between icloud and windows 10 and until apple and or Microsoft send a update to solve the problem no icloud for me on this computer!!

    I am having the all same problems with iCloud.  I would like to uninstall it but as it does not appear in Apps and Features or in another uninstall programme (Geek), I have been unable to remove it.  Can anyone give me any ideas as to how I can find it and remove it.  I removed iTunes, Quicktime, Bonjour and  everything else pertaining to Apple products in the vain hope iCloud would go as well but it didn't.  I installed an older version of iCloud 1.0.2.17 but that wouldn't work so as that appeared in control panel I removed that.  The iCloud app is still in the Apps list but won't open at all.  My photos are still in my folder on my computer and I am not worried about losing them as they are backed up elsewhere.  Any help in removing iCloud would be appreciated.  Thanks.

    It should show in Programs and Features. In Win 10 right click the Start Menu icon, and P&F should be the one at the top. If iCloud is installed, it should appear in the list....

    Havent tried the One Drive approach yet. Currently after unchecking the Photo option in icloud my laptop seems to work just fine. If the same issue pops up again, then will definitely look into disabling One Drive.

    Try typing "uninstall icloud" in the search bar/cortana next to the windows start button. It should take you straight to the control panel , add/remove programs screen.

    Thanks for the quick responses.  The main problem is that it doesn't appear in Programmes and Features but is still in the Apps list but won't open.  Perhaps it has removed itself.  How do I get rid of the icon then.  Also I have tried downloading and installing the latest version of iCloud both before and after upgrading to W10 but everytime it fails and I receive the message "There is a problem with the Windows installer package.  A programme required for this install to complete could not be run".  Am slowly loosing the will to live at the moment.  At least explore.exe has stopped crashing for the moment.

    Simple question...I assume you have done a full restart after the attempted removal? I have seen icons remain in the Programs list in Win7 until a reboot.

     

    If it still remains, and you can't reinstall, maybe someone has a viable solution. I would go into the Registry and start ripping out references to the program, but if you're not comfortable playing there, don't.

    Yes, I did reboot and the icon is still there and I clicked and it opened, I signed in and so far everything is stable.  I have even taken a test photo on my camera and am waiting to seem when it uploads to either iCloud or via OneDrive in to photos.  It already in OneDrive on my phone.  Fingers crossed.  Thanks everyone for their suggestions, hopefully I won't be back or is that pushing my luck too far.

    I had this same problem of iCloud Photos not having the right permissions. I found that you don't really have to "reinstall" iCloud, however... All I did was this:

     

    1. Sign out of iCloud

    2. Move the c:/users/[your name]/pictures/iCloud Photos to c:/users/[your name]/iCloud Photos

    3. Restart iCloud

    4. Change the path to iCloud Photos to c:/users/[your name]/iCloud Photos

    5. Apply

    6. Reboot


    That's it.

    Like you folks I encountered this issue on mine and my wife’s computers shortly after upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10 Home (wife’s) and Professional (mine). My observation was that several running apps were failing during this erratic behavior and through a process of elimination (disabling apps) I found that disabling “iCloud Photos” in the Startup section of Task Manager stopped this erratic behavior and survived reboots. And, iCloud continued to function properly with Outlook sharing both Contacts and Calendars with our networked computers, my iPad and iPhone.

     

    During this period of troubleshooting I didn’t uninstall or change iCloud in any way except to disable iCloud Photos from starting whenever our computers restarted. However, I might have discovered the root cause of this problem, at least for our computers. Yesterday I discovered that I couldn’t save a picture attached to an E-mail to the Pictures folder or any of its sub folders on our computers. Turns out that when I clicked on the Pictures folder, right clicked and selected Properties, and then clicked on Security; the computer’s owner/administrator “MyName (Computer-Name\MyName)” was either not listed under the “group or users name” (on my wife’s computer) or was listed (on mine), but had no privileges. This issue also existed for all underlying folders, which included iCloud Photos. I discovered that by either updating my wife’s computer to include her in the Security Section with Permissions set to Full Control or in my case to update my Permissions to Full Control; the correct Permissions updated at the Picture folder level and were then enumerated to all underlying folders and I could save new pictures to all folders.

     

    I’ve now enabled “iCloud Photos” in the Startup section of Task Manager and the erratic behavior has not returned.

     

    It appears that during the upgrade process security and permissions were somehow messed up because it all worked on Windows 7.

     

    If others still have an issue, you might want to look at the security properties of the Pictures folder; which should influence all underlying folders. Interestingly, the Documents, Music, Videos, etc. folders were okay and didn’t exhibit this problem.

    Many Thanks, I've been away for a few days, Followed this simplified method with no real confidence and guess what - It worked!

     

    I'm still totally amazed that MS have pushed this out to a billion naive users with things at this level of obviousness still unfixed. Makes me wonder what else is out there. I certainly do not plan to update my primary work computer for a few months yet.

     

    My wife, who can just about copy stuff from one directory to another has just told me that 'Oh the computer is updating to Windows 10 at the moment' which I'm a bit apprehensive about. {i'm actually puzzled as she doesn't have Admin privileges on that PC...} I think there will be a lot of upset people if they've got anything wrong. It's being presented to users as a 'just do it', Any comments about backup etc get lost in the click throughs...
