Q: I want to connect a obd2 bluetooth device. Do i have to buy an android?

Recently bought an DTC reader to be able to record tech data from my car. (elm327 obd2)

Simple to connect to my wife´s samsung and my laptop.

But what is the problem with my Iphone? it just doesn´t find the bluetooth device?

Seems like a very rudimentary demand on a modern mobile...

What am i doing wrong?

iPhone 4, iOS 5.1

ELM 327 Bluetooth can be paired with Macbook Air.

Macbook Air can can cover that protocol. Also as application it has Movi from Yhasi or another to be looked for on Internet. Good luck!

    Hi All,

I'm not sure this is entirely solved yet but just wanna share what I have encountered with the OBD II BlueTooth & Wifi hardware devices.

There are quite a few hardware brands/makes out there you can get, some are cheap, some are costly but definitely works. I bought two different OBD II hardware units, ScanTool OBDLink MX Wifi version and the GoPoint BT1A (Bluetooth). Both works very well with it's own free software provided via iTunes App Store. I have no issues connecting via BlueTooth with both iOS (iPad Mini 2, iPhone 5S & iPhone 6+) and Android (Samsung Note Edge, Sony Xperia X2/3) for the GoPoint BT1A unit though I had problems with the cheaper HH OBD Advanced (OEM) product which iPhone fails to detect it but not for Android phones. There's another OBD II unit, "Automatic", it works well if you are in the US, else where does work due to VIN number.

On the software side of things, I personally use Palmer's DashCommand, ScanTool OBDLink (For MX Wifi unit) and GoPoint BT1 (For GoPoint BT1A unit). To date, I prefer to use DashCommand as it has quite a vast tracking results and able to log them down as well. Setting up Wifi requires manual setup but it works. I have other software like Dynolicious, Harry's LapTimer, Speed Tracker recently purchased, NovaScan which I have not tried much yet because some of these are more suited for Tracks which I have not come around to it yet with my AMG car.

Hope that helps in general for some of you.

    Thanks.

    David

You are responding to a post made 3 years ago and that user has not been around for a year.

This is what I want to know, too. Even if this is an old question someone responded (even if it was deggie)...who was of no help.
I have a 5S with iOS 8.3. My laptop works with my Bluetooth ELM327 OBD tool. Why won't the Iphone?

As I understand it, there is a bug in the latest OS that doesn't let some Bluetooth items connect. My iphone does not "see" it at all.

Reading through this thread I'm a little sad that Apple chose not to support Bluetooth serial profile.

Looking at the code for it in Android and Linux, I can see it really wouldn't have been hard to implement.

Difficulty was probably not a factor in their decision. FTP isn't hard to implement either.

I don't think it is, I just tried with my iPhone 5s and it doesn't see the elm327 at all as a device in Bluetooth or even wifi. I purchased two different apps though iTunes to try- money waisted

Everything I can find says it is. If the apps you purchased say they are then you can be pretty sure it it.

Have you previously paired the device with anything else? Have you tried Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings? Is the device in pairing mode?

the problem isn't with the apps, its with the iPhone not able to find the elm327 mini via Bluetooth or even wifi.the iPhone does pair with my aftermarket stereo, and my bose sound dock via Bluetooth- I even removed both those devices from my iPhone, and re-paired them to it, but the iPhone never found the elm327.

I didn't say the problem was the apps. I said they wouldn't be in the store if the iPhone was incapable of pairing with the device. Have you cleared all pairings from the device and are you sure it is in pairing mode?

yes, I already cleared all paired devices from my iPhone completely. and after about the 10th failed pairing with the elm327, I had paired my iphone with a new-previously unpaired device to my iPhone to verify it is searching for new devices.

You keep saying you cleared all devices from the phone. I was asking if you had cleared all devices from the elm327 also.
