I'm sorry to hear that you are having this issue with iTunes. I also apologize, I'm a bit unclear on exactly what you are describing or what may have led to this situation. If you have recently started using Apple Music and the iCloud Music Library, you may want to try turning the iCloud Music Library off as outlined in the following article (it should be the opposite steps to turning it on as described):

Thank you for your reply.
I did as you suggested, however when I accessed iTunes on my macbook air i7, I did not see any selections for turning the Music Library on or off. And when accessing my Music Library list, I see icons showing a cloud with a downward pointing arrow next to each of my songs. I am therefore assuming that the songs are in the cloud and require downloading in order to play.
By the way I'm using OS X Version 10.9.5, Mavericks, as Yosemite makes it run hot.

Based on that, it sounds like you may have iTunes Match enabled instead. If that is the case, you may find these articles more helpful:
