Also some developers allow you to download older compatible versions of their apps, so if the app is free you could download the current version on your computer's iTunes so that it's in your purchase history, and then on your iPad see if you can download an older compatible version of it - you should see something like this if you can :

If the app is paid for you could try checking with the developer to see if that will work, don't buy the app and then find that it doesn't.
