I have heard that upgrading the software too much further can cause problems.
I agree completely with Allan's remarks, and they certainly trump my comment.
But I saw this, and, assuming your Mac is even capable of upgrade, I can tell you that not upgrading software can cause even more problems ... such as you're seeing now, or, more significantly, security issues.

Aug 16, 2015 3:39 PM in response to brycca39by K Shaffer,• How to identify MacBook models - Apple Support
• Apple MacBook Specs (All MacBook Technical Specs) at everymac.com:

With some identification, one may be able to place your build model spec
across the production years of the original MacBook, 2006 to 2010; where
hardware change and as-shipped system software also affects upgrades.
Good luck & happy computing!

Aug 17, 2015 7:26 PM in response to brycca39by brycca39,Thank you! I am not extremely familiar with Mac's and didn't realized I had not provided all the information!
After searching the serial # I came up with
~VIN,MACBOOK (13-INCH EARLY 2008)
Is that coupled with the other information I have provided enough to base a suggestion on?

Aug 17, 2015 7:37 PM in response to brycca39by sberman,As you can see here, your machine is too old to upgrade to OS X Yosemite.

I believe that means it cannot upgrade to OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) either.
